In the very early stages the Jamaicans have posted the fastest time so far. It has been hard to make up ground on the final run, but can anyone move past gold medal hope Mariama Jamanka?

[On movement within the top 10] It gives the British a little bit of a buffer - they just have to put down a decent run and they will come down in eighth place minimum.

The gold medal will be decided by the blink of an eye - whoever twitches first between the Germans and the Americans.

Japan take it and it's an Olympic record time. The Dutch are beaten into second place. The look on their faces. They did not come here for a silver medal.

Anon: Having been part of the the 1st GB women to compete at bobsleigh at the Olympics in Salt Lake 2002 I'm immensely proud of M&M. If they stay where they are it will be the best result at an Olympics with 8th. The sport is in good hands. COME ON

Anon: Adversity is a very good motivator. After all wasn't Eddie the Eagle the one who went against naysayers and competed. Despite not having snow and facilities we are competing and it is important for national morale and self-esteem.

  20. How do they get the bobsled to the top?published at 12:53 Greenwich Mean Time 21 February 2018

    Women's bobsleigh

If you’re wondering why there’s a delay between the two runs you need to consider that it take time to move the heavy sleds - which can weigh as much as 129kgs in the women’s events.

When they’ve finished competing the athletes and coaches, although for some of the smaller nations it is generally one coach, drag them onto a van at the back of the finish area and they’re driven to the top.

It’s then like an old fashioned Formula One stop, back at the top of the track, with runners (the blades the sleds run on) often cleaned and brief maintenance carried out.

As it’s reverse order for the final run, those who went off last (Nigeria), will be off first and therefore have the least amount of turnaround, which doesn’t help their already difficult position!
