    Biathlon women's 7.5km sprint

Swedish roars try to haul Elvira Oberg to the line quicker than her legs can take her. The 22-year-old drives to the line and crosses in 21 minutes 15.2 seconds... that's put her into the silver medal position!

Pain and grind is etched across Elvira Oberg's face as she bolts towards the line. She's not looking quick enough for gold, at the moment, but it is going to be very close to Dorothea Wierer's time.

One kilometre to go for the 22-year-old Swede...

  3. Van der Poel breaks world recordpublished at 09:41 Greenwich Mean Time 11 February 2022

Sweden's Nils van der Poel obliterates Patrick Roest's time and breaks his own world record by over two seconds recording 12:30.74.

Phenomenal. Surely a second gold awaits?

Looks like that blistering run has worked for Italy's Davide Ghiotto as well, who used the 5,000m winner to set his own pace. He moves into the bronze medal position behind Roest.

Canada's Ted-Jan Bloemen (the defending champion) and Belgium's Bart Swings are last to go

One last lung-burning push to the finish. Elvira Oberg coming into the range for the last time.

This has got to be flawless if she is to stand a chance.

10 out of 10! She was under real pressure but that was brilliantly done by the 22-year-old.

    Biathlon women's 7.5km sprint

Elvira Oberg is the younger of the Swedish sisters and competing in her first Olympics. She has just shot clean 10 out of 10 on the second trip to the range and is known for being a very quick skier...

    Biathlon women's 7.5km sprint

Italy's Dorothea Wierer falls to the snow in delight. That's because she has completed the course in a time which puts her in the silver medal position.

After three individual World Championship golds in 2019 and 2020, Wierer is aiming for her first individual Olympic medal.

A time of 21 minutes 21.5 seconds gives her an excellent chance. But behind her, the Oberg sisters are going well...

A quick reminder what the biathlon is all about: it's essentially an energy-sapping cross-country ski race with a couple of pauses to shoot a rifle at a range.

In this event, athletes stop twice at the range - once from a prone position, one from a standing.

Targets are 50m away and larger from the standing position.

Swedish sisters Hanna and Elvira Oberg are highly-fancied for the medals, with the siblings out on the course and shooting and skiing well.

Patrick Roest's leading time still stands but for how much longer?

Nils van der Poel's quest for his second gold medal of the games is now in full swing.

The Swede is rocking along just outside his own world record pace and well inside the time set by Dutchman Roest.

No wonder. The Norwegian has completed the course in 20 minutes 44.3 seconds and is currently top of the pops.

Men's ice hockey: Sweden 3-0 Slovakia

Looks to be game over already in the Group C match between Sweden and Slovakia. And it's only the end of the first 20-minute period. Two more for Slovakia to turn things around.

Lucas Wallmark and Max Friberg add to Sweden's advantage.

In Group B, Switzerland have cancelled out an opener by the Czech Republic and they are tied at 1-1.

The favourites are out in the women's 7.5km sprint and Norway's Marte Olsbu Roeiseland is leading the way after 4km.

This event is a cross-country ski race where athletes stop at the shooting range twice.

The first is from a prone position and the second from standing. For every missed target, the athlete must complete a 150m penalty loop.

    Brutal.

Round-robin: South Korea 9-7 Great Britain

    BBC Sport

Let's hear from skip Eve Muirhead, talking to BBC Sport:

Eve Muirhead: "I would say we had control after the eighth end and if my last in the ninth curled another centimetre we were going to give up two, max and we had the hammer in the last.

"It's frustrating and its annoying but that's curling isn't it? You win by inches and you lose by inches.

"We've got to learn from our mistakes out there today and come back tomorrow firing."

    Was the ice changing?

"The ice was definitely a little straighter today. I would say it was straighter all over. These are the kind of things we need to be a little bit sharper on and figure that out a little bit earlier.

"Overall the ice is great but we need to adapt to straighter conditions a little bit early."

What will you to say to the team?

"We're not on until tomorrow evening now so we have got a little time .

"I guess it's learning from our mistakes from this game and also switching off for a little while.

"But we've also got to remember we've had a very tough start here. The thing is we know we can beat all of these guys."

Medals are the name of the game and more are up for grabs shortly in the biathlon. Not an event for the faint-hearted, this one.

It's essentially an energy-sapping cross-country ski race with a couple of pauses to shoot a rifle at a range.

Sounds like a Spaghetti Western in the mountains rather than the desert.

The women's 7.5km sprint could be a battle between Norway's Tiril Eckhoff, the world champion, and Marte Olsbu Roiseland, who won silver in Pyeongchang. The 2018 Olympic champion, Germany's Laura Dahlmeier, has retired.

Despite a 89-athlete field, there are no Brits involved in the race.

Curling is not the only live action on the ice. Two matches have just started in the men's ice hockey.

In Group B, the Czech Republic are looking to bounce back after their shock opening defeat by Olympic debutants Denmark.

The Czechs face Switzerland, who also lost their first game.

In Group C, two-time gold medallists Sweden face Slovakia as they aim to make it two wins from two.

There are three groups of four teams, with the group winners and best runner-up directly qualifying for the quarter-finals.

Teams ranked fifth to 12th go into play-off matches to also reach the last eight.

They dominated the reigning Olympic champions Sweden but they haven't been at the races.
