Kamila Valieva, the 15-year-old Russian figure skating star who helped her team win Winter Olympic gold in Beijing, failed a drugs test in December.

Valieva, who was the first female skater to land a quadruple jump at an Olympics as her team won last Monday, had a sample collected on 25 December at the Russian Figure Skating Championships in St Petersburg.

But the positive result was only reported on Tuesday - the day after she helped to win team gold, but before the medal ceremony had taken place.

Valieva tested positive for trimetazidine, which is used in the prevention of angina attacks, but is on the banned list because it is classed as a cardiac metabolic modulator and has been proven to improve physical efficiency.

Elsewhere on the ice we're underw ay as Switzerland take on the Russian Olympic Committee. It's scoreless deep in the opening period. The Russian team has never won a medal in women's competition at an Olympics while the Swiss took bronze in 2014.

So far in the quarter-finals of women's competition USA beat Czech Republic 4-1, while Canada beat Sweden 11-0. Ouch.

The USA are less favoured than Canada in terms of their chances to cope without NHL stars at the Games.

They have not won a medal outside of North America since claiming silver at the 1972 Games in Sapporo, Japan, whilst their two gold medals both came on home turf – the most recent being the 1980 “Miracle on Ice”.

    Snowboard cross mixed team

Nick Baumgartner has been speaking to the press after his snowboard cross mixed team gold with Lindsey Jacobellis.

He was 10th in the men's individual event on Thursday.

"It's unbelievable, it's days like two days ago that make today feels so good," he said. "These tears are so much better than the ones from the other day.

"I can't tell you how much pressure is off you when you know you've got someone like Lindsey in the gate after you. When you can ride like that and you don't have to worry about stuff, you see your best come out.

"I was proud to be able to show everyone I was worth. I knew if I messed up she could cover for me, but I wanted to prove to everyone what I wanted to prove two days ago - and I did that today."

    Snowboard cross mixed team event

Right then. If you're just tuning in you missed a thrilling new event at the Winter Olympics, with USA taking gold in the snowboard cross mixed team event.

Teams of two - one man and one woman - hurled down the slope individually. The male time set the handicap for the women's race that followed.

Over a quarter-final, semi-final and final the US team of Nick Baumgartner and Lindsey Jacobellis took gold. Great Britain ended sixth.

The US team had a combined age of 76, which we loved. Throw in the fact Jacobellis also won individual gold earlier this week and it was story on story.

"I'm proud of these guys, and the women too. To see the progression from where it started to where it is today, and to have a helping hand in that and see where they take it from here, but it's been amazing."
