Britain came through with less than a centimetre (in the draw shot challenge).

It was always going to be tough for them, but sometimes that's when you are at your best, when you back's against the wall but you know what - you have to fight - and they came out fighting today and they played so well.

That performance will stand them in good stead coming into that semi-final.

They're going to take that second chance and they're going to make the most of it.

  2. What you may have missed - GB into last fourpublished at 11:07 Greenwich Mean Time 17 February 2022

It was like the last day of the football season at the Ice Cube earlier today with Eve Muirhead's rink relying on results elsewhere after their own win over Russian Olympic Committee to book a place in the last four.

Fortunately for them, Sweden saw off South Korea and qualification was assured.

Great Britain will actually play the Swedes in tomorrow's semi-final.

    Getting in the zone?

Great Britain take on USA in the men's curling semi-final in an hour's time.

Win it and they'll be guaranteed at least a silver medal - Great Britain's first medal of the Games.

You'll be able to watch the match on BBC One or at the top of this page.

    Women's ski cross final

    Graham Bell
Five-time Olympic skier on BBC TV

The bronze medal in the women's ski cross final came after a controversial judges' decision (see below). This is what Graham Bell thinks:

Crazy crazy decision - that's not ski cross. Let's not take away from the gold medal winner - Sandra Naeslund was incredible and Mariella Thompson was also brilliant in this race.

Marielle Thompson lands between Fanny Smith's skis so she has to move her skis apart, what else can she do? She's got Thompson landing on her skis so she spreads her legs to allow the Canadian to land between her and that just happens that's where the German's coming through.

You can see it, she's avoiding the skier in front of her. She's not blocking the skier behind her. It's ridiculous.

If you let that stand, if that is the way that ski cross is going, then you can forget about it. It's not what the sport's all about.

And even Daniela Maier was stood at the finish going "It's not right, it's not right, I don't want this bronze medal," if you are going to call that as a deliberate block. Listen to her. She didn't want that bronze.

If you deliberately pull someone back, or you push them into the fence, then yes, you get disqualified. But that was not a yellow card.

This photograph, taken earlier today at the ski cross competition, is brilliant - it almost doesn't look real... all four competitors riding the air as they seek a fifth-place finish in the small final. That honour went to Canada's Brittany Phelan (green bib).

Speaking of the music in the figure skating, we've just had Estonia's Eva-Lotta Kiibus skating to the soundtrack from A Star is Born.

It was going well until she took a tumble during a difficult jump.

Ten days ago Kamila Valieva became the first female to land a quadruple jump at a Olympics.

A lot has happened since then but for the four minutes she is on the ice, she will again seek to land three of the difficult jumps. Last time she managed two, making a mistake on the third.

Quads - four rotations of the body mid-air - are rare in women's figure skating.

Tonight only Valieva and her two Russian Olympic Committee team-mates, Anna Shcherbakova and Alexandra Trusova have got any of them in their routines.

Trusova, incidentally, is going to attempt five of them! She's currently fourth so will be hoping to get into the top three with that.

Some interesting music choices for the programme tonight.

There is a pleasing bit of Hollywood with 2018 world silver medallist Wakaba Higuchi performing to The Lion King, directly before Russian Olympic Committee's Alexandra Trusova has something (unspecified) from the Cruella soundtrack.

Kamila Valieva, who is the focus of much of the attention, will close the competition by dancing to Maurice Ravel's Bolero, the music that British viewers best know as accompanying Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean's 1984 gold medal winning routine.

The one with the floaty mauve costumes. You know.

  9. What you might have missed - GB's freestyle qualiferspublished at 10:33 Greenwich Mean Time 17 February 2022

Freestyle skiers Zoe Atkin and Gus Kenworthy qualified for the halfpipe finals in differing fashions at the Winter Olympics in Beijing.

Atkin qualified in fourth place for Friday's women's final - raising hopes of a maiden Team GB medal.

But team-mate Kenworthy scraped through to the men's final, finishing in the 12th and final qualifying spot.

Canada's ice hockey gold medallists Marie-Philip Poulin (pictured) and Rebecca Johnston both win their fourth consecutive medals at the Winter Olympics (three golds and one silver in total).

They join six other Canadian women on at least four Olympic medals in ice hockey. The record is five, held by their compatriots Hayley Wickenheiser and Jayna Hefford.

It ended with the American goaltender up in attack in search of the goal that would take it to extra time.

And we all like a walkabout goaltender don't we?

Twenty five athletes will perform in this free skate - the IOC added an extra skater to usual because of the controversy around Kamila Valieva.

It wants to ensure that the record books will feature the full complement of 24 in case the Russian's anti-doping case ends up with a ban that will disqualify her.

The women's singles is split into two sections - the short programme and the free skate.

The short programme saw Kamila Valieva return to the ice after her positive drugs test became known.

She was allowed to compete because of a court ruling on Monday.

The skaters go in reverse order in the free skate - a routine of four minutes in which skaters choose their own music - so Valieva will be the last we see.

Scores are combined with the highest taking the gold, although there will be no medal ceremony if Valieva wins.

Is Kamila Valieva going to win this competition? Despite the events of the past nine days she leads the women’s event after the short programme.

The 15-year-old Russian will be the last of the 25 skaters to perform.

What a lot in store for the final part of today's action.

From 10:00, Russian teenage sensation Kamila Valieva, who is taking part with the scrutiny of the world on her shoulders in the wake of her failed drugs test, competes in the singles free skate. She is favourite for a gold medal she would not be presented with as the International Olympic Committee assess their next move.

Then from 12:05, Bruce Mouat's British curling team take on defending champions USA in a battle for a place in the gold-medal match.

    • 10:00: Women's figure skating singles free skate, featuring Russian Kamila Valieva. Valieva expected around 13:45 GMT.
    • 11:00: The climax of the team Nordic combined event.
    • 12:05: Great Britain's big semi-final against USA in the men's curling.

    Stay tuned.
