Dern, wearing all white, looks locked in and confident as she raises her arm in the air before stepping into the octagon.

In their first fight in December 2020, Mackenzie Dern came away with the unanimous decision win with all three judges scoring the contest 29-28.

Dern failed to land a takedown despite shooting five times, with Jandiroba landing the only takedown of that fight in round two.

However, in all three rounds Dern out struck her opponent, landing 82 significant strikes in comparison to Jandiroba's 63.

Both fighters mainly targeted the head, with 69% of Dern's significant strikes landing there. Jandiroba landed to the head with 73% of her significant strikes, only attacking the leg with 3% of her shots.

Since this fight, Dern has competed nine more times in the UFC, winning just five of those bouts.

Jandiroba hasn't been as active with just seven fights in that timespan. But she has came out victorious on six occasions, her last defeat coming in October 2021 to Amanda Ribas.

Who are you backing in the rematch?

Thumbs up if Jandiroba wins or thumbs down if Dern takes it.

  4. How poker has helped Dern be a better fighterpublished at 20:43 BST 25 October

    Paul Battison
    BBC Sport in Abu Dhabi

Mackenzie Dern has found an interesting way to control her emotions better when she's fighting - she's started playing poker.

The American-Brazilian strawweight told me she started playing the card game last year, and has won both her fights since.

She credits poker - a game which requires a lot of thought and patience - in helping her stay more composed inside the octagon.

"That patience and reading people, that's something that I do have. But in fighting I've always been more emotional, and trying to put in my style and make it happen," said Dern.

"Since playing poker and seeing how that helps me, I've been able to translate that into fighting."

Nurmagomedov defeats Bautista by unanimous decision

Umar Nurmagomedov took a unanimous decision victory over Mario Bautista in the final three-round fight of the night.

It wasn't easy for Nurmagomedov, as he was dropped by a knee early in the second round.

But the Russian fighter did excellently to get himself back on top with his wrestling, and probably did enough to win all three rounds.

Speaking after the victory, Nurmagomedov said: "I underestimated a little bit. He was tough, good defence.

"I always try to do [like Khabib], but I can't. Thank you to my team, my coaches. the fans, I love you guys.

"I will be ready, 100 times better than today. It doesn't matter who it will be. I will become champion."

    Aspinall v Gane

    Mason Jones - UFC lightweight

"Three minutes. Tom Aspinall will finish him in three minutes. If you want to put your money on it, Tom Aspinall will finish him in three minutes."

Alfie Davis - PFL 2025 lightweight tournament winner

"I think Tom should do it quite convincingly. Gane is a good athlete, but I think his grappling has always sort of lacked. He is a tricky striker, but Tom has a good solid base and a good team behind him. Tom should make easy work, but it's the fight business so we'll see."

Brazil's Virna Jandiroba is out for revenge tonight when she goes up against American Mackenzie Dern for the vacant strawweight title next.

Dern earned a unanimous decision win when the pair met back in 2020 but they have both since climbed up the rankings to earn a shot at gold.

Zhang Weili has vacated the belt to step up flyweight and challenge champion Valentina Shevchenko at UFC 322 next month.

Jandiroba is the fighter with the most momentum, having won five in a row, while Dern has won her last two trips to the octagon.

Nurmagomedov beats Bautista by unanimous decision

Russian Umar Nurmagomedov is back in the win column after losing against bantamweight champion Merab Dvalishvili in January.

Nurmagomedov's cousin and former lightweight champion Khabib is in the corner and just offered himself as the "new translator" as the post-fight interview began in the octagon.

Khabib quickly backed off and left Umar to do his talking.

There have been times tonight when the Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi almost feels like the Co-op Arena in Manchester.

There is a group of fans behind me who have been chanting "Tommy Aspinall" at various points, and they're getting louder as the night wears on.

I wonder what they've got in store for the main event?

  12. Has Aspinall lost any fights?published at 20:27 BST 25 October

    Aspinall v Gane

Tom Aspinall's run in the UFC has been almost perfect. He's picked up eight wins and lost just once, with all his victories coming by stoppage and only seeing the second round once.

Aspinall's overall record is 15 wins and three defeats.

It's questionable whether his loss in the UFC is worth any attention. Aspinall suffered a serious knee injury just 15 seconds into his bout with Curtis Blaydes and the fight had to be stopped.

But he avenged that blemish on his record in his most recent fight by beating Blaydes in 60 seconds.

Aspinall also lost twice before he joined the UFC but one of those was by disqualification due to an illegal downward elbow.

So technically, Aspinall's only real loss came at the hands of Stuart 'He-Man' Austin.

    Aspinall v Gane

Tom Aspinall tipped the scales at 255lb (18st 3lb) during Friday's weigh-in and promised a "big" performance tonight.

"This is going to be a very special performance guys, make sure you tune in, this is big," Aspinall said.

Challenger Ciryl Gane was 7.5lb lighter at 247.5lb (17st 9.5lb).

Gane was his usual calm self and appeared unbothered as the crowd booed, before delivering a short message.

"Very glad to be here guys, see you Saturday, thank you," Gane said.

  14. Predictions - 'Aspinall has momentum'published at 20:23 BST 25 October

    Aspinall v Gane

Alex Pereira - UFC light-heavyweight champion

"It's a tough fight. Tom is a complete fighter, but I do feel like he's fought a lot of aggressive guys, and I think Gane is a guy who's gonna do a lot of moving, he's gonna be a little more cautious, and that moving around a lot might frustrate Tom.

"First, second, third round, maybe Tom can't find Ciryl Gane, I think it's gonna be a different fight."

Fabian Edwards - PFL 2025 middleweight tournament winner

"I think Aspinall, because Gane hasn't really been active in MMA for the past year or so. He's been doing a movie while Aspinall has been in the gym because he thought he was going to fight Jon Jones.

"Aspinall has the momentum too. He's become a champion and has the confidence and all that to bring in there with him and he's going to perform. So I'll stick with the homeboy Tom."

Ciryl Gane enjoyed an undefeated (13-0) career in Muay Thai before transitioning into Mixed Martial Arts in 2018.

After three stoppage victories in MMA, Gane signed for the UFC in 2019 and the image above on the left was taken prior to his debut against Raphael Pessoa in Uruguay.

Gane was already in pretty impressive shape but the Frenchman has clearly been hitting the gym hard over the past six years and, as the image taken this week on the right shows, he has somehow found a way to fill out further.

Aside from those lats bursting out from behind his arms, Gane's shoulders look more defined too.

Tom Aspinall is a rare breed in many ways. There aren't many heavyweights out there that possess his speed or agility, but he's also one of the few UFC fighters without a nickname.

In July 2024, he was given the nickname 'honey badger' by retired two-weight champion Daniel Cormier, but it didn't stick, although a few fans tried to revive it by chanting it at him during Thursday's news conference.

There have been some great ones over the years; Israel 'The Last Stylebender' Adesanya, Anderson 'The Spider' Silva, Demetrious 'Mighty Mouse' Johnson and 'Thug' Rose Namajunas stand out.

My personal favourite is Roy 'Big Country' Nelson.

Let's throw it out to you the audience for some suggestions on some potential options for Aspinall.

    Nurmagomedov v Bautista

    Paul Battison
    BBC Sport in Abu Dhabi

It's fascinating watching Khabib Nurmagomedov when one of his fighters is in action, like his cousin Umar Nurmagomedov is right now.

He is so animated with his coaching at octagon-side, constantly barking instructions, pointing and putting his hands on his head.

He must be almost as exhausted when the bout finishes as his fighters are.

Alexander defeated Jailton Almeida with a split decision after three rounds.

The fight wasn't the most exciting, with Volkov struggling to stop the majority of Almeida's takedowns.

Speaking after the victory, Volkov said: "I get my credit. Everybody asked me before how I feel, now I feel better. It was hard to do something without the grappling, but I tried. I was more active on the ground.

"I'm now the number one contender."

Volkov was submitted by Tom Aspinall in 2022 and has lost twice to Ciryl Gane.

Brazil's Valter Walker defeated Englishman Louie Sutherland with a first round heel hook submission in another prelim fight.

Sutherland, making his UFC debut, caught Walker with a strong overhand early in the round.

But Walker landed a takedown and held his position on top before eventually getting the heel hook and forcing Sutherland to tap.

It was Walker's fourth heel hook submission win in a row, meaning he ties Rousimar Palhares for most in UFC history.
