With the focus being there in the middle of the pool on Adam Peaty, Nick Fink and Qin Haiyang, Nicolo Martinenghi was given the perfect opportunity to come from lane seven and nick it. He burgled that gold medal because everyone else was looking at one another in the middle of the pool.

You could see he was genuinely happy. You could see they were happy tears.

I'm just emotional for him because, as an athlete, you know what he has been through. I have achieved nothing compared to Adam - what he has achieved is unbelievable - I can't even get my head around it.

He is such a role model for the rest of that team - people look up to him and he just has so much respect. It is amazing to see him smile.

Anthony Mcnally: Well done Adam Peaty. To finish second after everything he’s been through.

Paul Williams: That race was close but capping off an amazing Olympic career. Changed how breaststroke was swam. Few more swims in the relays.

More from GB's Adam Peaty: "I'm so happy that I can race against the best in the world and still come joint-second. In my heart I have won, these are happy tears. I gave my absolute best every single day and I cannot be upset about that.

"I'm almost an older man here now. I can't have that relentless pursuit every single day without a sacrifice of some sort - they come in every single form. It's very hard to compete with the younger ones, so I'm very happy with that."

GB's Adam Peaty speaking after winning the men's 100m breaststroke silver medal: "It has been a very long way back. I look at the score there and you would never think in your wildest dreams that it would be 59 seconds to win it.

"I gave it my absolute all. I executed it as well as I could. It's not about the end goal, it's about the process. It doesn't matter what time it says on the scoreboard, I think in my heart I have already won."

I think Adam Peaty goes to bed tonight incredibly proud of himself. There is nothing that this guy has not done in the last ten years. In fact he's done it all more than twice; World Championships, European Championships, Commonwealth Games, Olympic Games.

He has been the talisman of the British team. He has faced the hardest fight he has ever had over the last two years, gone to the Olympic Games again and won a silver medal with his boy watching on. The crowning event of his career.

That was an amazing swim from Martinenghi. He took the opportunity and it was a scrap but, as we said beforehand, there was a lot of emotion around this race. He was all over it.

Equal second for Adam Peaty - brilliant!

Right at the end, you could actually see them all trying to time their last stroke right.

Adam Peaty is so spurred on by missing the World Championships last year and watching the title go to Qin Haiyang. When you think of the difficulties he has been through, both physically and mentally, I didn't even know he would be competing at the trials or be in a position to compete at the Olympic Games.

He has put himself in this position. He is an incredible competitor and sounds like he is actually enjoying being back racing. To be back in with a chance to win a gold medal is incredible.

    Three-Peat incoming?published at 20:51 British Summer Time 28 July

    Men's 100m breaststroke final

Adam Peaty is aiming to become the second man after the great American Michael Phelps to win the same individual event at three Games in a row.

The 29-year-old Briton cruised to his previous two Olympic golds, in 2016 and 2021, but has struggled with injury and his mental health since the last Games in Tokyo.

He took a break from the sport and considered stopping entirely and in his absence at last year’s World Championships Qin Haiyang emerged as a serious rival.

Qin swam a 57.69-second 100m last year, making him the second-fastest of all time behind Peaty and the quickest of anyone since Tokyo.

This race is not only huge for Adam Peaty but it is also massive in the sport.

There has only been one other person that has managed to win a gold medal in an event three times, and that is the great man himself, Michael Phelps.

For a Brit, for our sport, for him to join the likes of Michael Phelps in that category it is absolutely massive.
