  1. 'Sakakibara was going to retire'published at 20:03 British Summer Time 11 August

    My moment of the Games

    Ed Leigh
    BBC Sport commentator

My moment of the Games was BMX rider, Saya Sakakibara.

She won gold for Australia at the expense of GB’s Beth Shriever. Saya’s brother Kai was involved in an accident in 2020 while racing and suffered a severe brain injury and is still recovering.

Saya then crashed badly at the Tokyo Olympics and had concussion. She was going to retire because she felt it was all too much but she decided to stick with it.

I was gutted for Beth, but was very happy for Saya that she got the medal she deserved for both her and her brother.

    Far too many boats.

Thankfully it's back on solid ground tonight in the Stade de France.

Ah, the memories of that opening ceremony all come flooding back with a montage.

The rain, the mechanical horse down the river Seine, the flaming piano and who could forget that magical moment with Celine Dion on the Eiffel Tower.

Emily: I’m really going to miss the Olympics. My first two weeks at home with my newborn baby girl and days have been spent watching all these amazing athletes. I’ve made sure she knows how inspirational everyone is.

Paul: Show why sports is just the best. It gives you everything you want. Happiness, sadness and anger and yet you want more. Sport is king, roll on the next sport.

Tonight, after weeks of rehearsals through the night, French dancer Arthur Cadre will step into the Stade de France to play a central role in the closing ceremony.

It was only eight weeks ago that artistic director Thomas Jolly sent him an Instagram message inviting him to dance.

"I was thrilled - I’ve never been on a project of this scale in France before," Cadre, who is a master of contortions, told the BBC ahead of his performance.

The dancers have been rehearsing seven hours a day – sometimes through the night because the Stade de France is used for athletics during the day, he said.

But, he said, the gruelling schedule was worth it because he believes dance, as a form of expression, embodies the Olympics spirit.

"In French we say 'le dépassement de soi', which means ‘pushing yourself towards something else’, and I think dance, like the Olympics, can really convey this message."

So what can we expect from him tonight? He’s giving nothing away but to say: "Expect the unexpected."

  9. 'It demonstrates everything that is awe-inspiring about the Olympics'published at 19:57 British Summer Time 11 August

    My moment of the games

    Melissa Coombs

In my opinion, there is no contest here – it has to be Alex Yee winning triathlon gold for GB.

The triathlon is one of my favourite Olympic sports because there are so many twists and turns, and this race was no exception. I think most people had assumed Yee would settle for silver when he was 15 seconds behind New Zealand’s Hayden Wilde on the run… but he had other plans.

When Yee emerged on the home straight in the lead, I leaped out of my chair.

What he achieved in that race is remarkable, and for me it demonstrates everything that is awe-inspiring about the Olympics – the athletes’ resilience, mental and physical strength to just keep going.

It's another scorcher in Paris - and sure enough, "something's cooking" at the Stade de France ahead of the closing ceremony, one woman tells me outside the stadium.

California resident Snono is referring to rumours that Snoop Dogg could perform as part of tonight's proceedings - as Paris formally marks the hosting handover to Los Angeles for the next Olympics.

It doesn't seem impossible, because LA native Snoop has been in Paris throughout the Games.

As for other celebrities - Snono is "kinda indifferent" to rumours that Tom Cruise might make his own appearance too.

But Frenchwoman Caroline has her fingers crossed that there'll be a touch of Hollywood stardust to look forward to. Even better would be a surprise showing from Beyoncé, she says.

There's no confirmation of the musical lineup just yet.

  14. 'The atmosphere when a French athlete is competing is astonishing'published at 19:52 British Summer Time 11 August

    My moment of the games

    Amy Lofthouse
    BBC Sport in Paris

The best bit has just been Paris itself, and how much it’s embraced the Games.

When we first arrived, there was a sense of meh about the Games – things didn’t feel quite ready, people just seemed quite indifferent or annoyed about the Olympics and the impact it was having on their everyday lives.

But first Antoine Dupont, then Leon Marchand and Teddy Riner, triumphing in the tricolore got people on board. It’s been crowded outside bars, people gathering around TVs to watch events, and the atmosphere at any venue, no matter which sport, when a French athlete is competing is astonishing.

Sitting at the Stade du France and seeing a decathlon event held up for two minutes because the crowd would not stop cheering for Marchand, who had just won another gold in the pool down the road, was goosebump-inducing.

  18. Watch: Harrington defends Olympic titlepublished at 19:48 British Summer Time 11 August

Ireland's Kellie Harrington made history by winning back-to-back Olympic gold medals with victory against China's Wenlu Yang in the women's 60kg final at Roland Garros.

Harrington claimed a split 4-1 points decision win against Yan to ensure Paris 2024 would be the most successful Olympics in Ireland's history - with four golds and three bronze medals.

The 34-year-old announced her retirement after winning the the bout, stating she was ready for the start of her "life chapter" with her partner, Mandy.

She has enhanced her reputation as one Ireland's sport greats.

Along with rowers Paul O’Donovan and Fintan McCarthy, who defended their double lightweight sculls title, and hammer thrower Pat O’Callaghan, who won gold in 1928 and 1932, Harrington is the only other Irish athlete to defend their Olympic title.

Harrington joined swimmer Daniel Wiffen, gymnast Rhys McClenaghan and rowers O’Donovan and McCarthy as Ireland’s gold medallists at a historic Games in Paris.

  19. 'Give us a song Kellie'published at 19:47 British Summer Time 11 August

    My moment of the Games

    Andy Stevenson
    BBC commentator

I’ve been very lucky to witness two of the biggest moments at these Olympics for the host nation, France. The atmosphere and celebrations at the men’s rugby sevens victory and Teddy Riner’s third individual gold medal in judo were incredible.

But the moment I’ll remember more than any other was at Roland Garros, after Irish boxer Kellie Harrington had won her second Olympic Gold medal in her final bout before retirement. The crowd had largely emptied except for a few hundred Irish fans.

Just before midnight, one of them shouted ‘give us a song Kellie!’ and she proceeded to give us all an emotional rendition of an Irish folk song called ‘Grace’. It was just a beautiful, heartfelt moment that I felt privileged to see.
