Organisers again blame weather for Seine issuespublished at 21:44 British Summer Time 30 July

Olympics organisers are determined to go ahead with their plans for the Seine to be used for the swimming leg of the men’s triathlon, despite lingering concerns over water quality causing the postponement of the event this morning.

Aurelie Merle, the Paris 2024 sports director, confirmed in this morning’s press briefing that testing had confirmed unacceptable levels of E.coli bacteria throughout “the entirety of the course”.

Explaining the pollution issue, she pointed to factors beyond organisers’ control such as recent weather conditions. A month’s worth of rainfall had fallen in the city in just 36 hours over the weekend, she said.

Officials at the briefing were quick to stress that they had been closely in touch with the athletes, informing them of the postponement soon after 04:00 local time (03:00 BST).

“We are all disappointed,” admitted Marisol Casado, the president of World Triathlon. But she was “quite confident” the event would take place.

That is in spite of the fact more heavy rain is forecast for the city at some point over the coming days, raising the prospect of further delays.

Officials insisted that downgrading the event to a duathlon was a last resort.

I think anything is possible at this stage. It is a possibility for Andy Murray and Dan Evans to get a medal. Murray is playing way better tennis than we saw at Wimbledon, even in the first round they looked like a transformed team today.

The pair of them look energised, like they are gelling together, they have chemistry out there and they are just loving it.

'We are just puppets in a puppet show'published at 21:44 British Summer Time 30 July

    Men's triathlon

We were told in the early hours of this morning that the men's triathlon event, which was due to take place today, had been postponed due to poor water quality in the River Seine.

It is now set to be held on Wednesday at 09:45 BST (10:45 local time), after the women's event, which is scheduled to start at 07:00 (08:00 local time).

Final tests of the water will be taken at 02:30 BST.

Some Olympic athletes have been reacting to the decision.

Commenting on World Triathlon’s Instagram post announcing the postponement, Belgian triathlete Marten Van Riel wrote: “If the priority was the health of the athletes this event would have been moved to another location a long time ago. We are just puppets in a puppet show.

"Duathlon is no triathlon and changing the day like that in the middle of the night is disrespectful to the years of preparation of the athletes and to all your fans that were going to watch live or on TV. What an appearance for triathlon on the biggest stage!”

Dan Evans and Andy Murray are into the quarter-finals, but don't yet know who they will be playing.

It will either be the third-seeded American pairing of Taylor Fritz and Tommy Paul (both ranked inside the top 13 in the singles world rankings) or the veteran Dutch duo of 37-year-old Robin Haase and 42-year-old Jean-Julien Rojer.

That is the first team in history, the same quartet, that has successfully defended the 4x200m freestyle title. These guys won it four years ago in Tokyo and they have turned up again tonight.

Special mention to two guys; James Guy has brought his A-game today, his personal best time. Also Duncan Scott, he has been the cornerstone of the British team when it comes to relay swimming. He brought the race home in 1 minute 43 seconds faster than what the event was won in yesterday.

Not only did they cope with the pressure of being favourites, they absolutely delivered. And in a 'slow' pool, just missed the world record.

I literally cannot believe what we have seen. The drama that we have seen, the rollercoaster we have been on during that match, two hours and four minutes.

    Tennis - men's doubles second round - Evans/Murray 6-3 6-7 (8-10) 11-9 Gille/Vliegen

Andy Murray's serve is a good one, the Belgians can only pat back a return and Dan Evans is there to absolutely power away a winner at the net.

Murray and Evans are bouncing around like youngsters. Just as in the first round, they were on the brink.

In round one they saved five match points to defeat the Japanese pairing of Taro Daniel and Kei Nishikori. Today they fended off two match points to beat the resilient gutsy Belgian duo of Sander Gille and Joran Vliegen.

Murray's retirement is delayed again. On they go, into the quarter-finals.
