Olympics organisers are determined to go ahead with their plans for the Seine to be used for the swimming leg of the men’s triathlon, despite lingering concerns over water quality causing the postponement of the event this morning.
Aurelie Merle, the Paris 2024 sports director, confirmed in this morning’s press briefing that testing had confirmed unacceptable levels of E.coli bacteria throughout “the entirety of the course”.
Explaining the pollution issue, she pointed to factors beyond organisers’ control such as recent weather conditions. A month’s worth of rainfall had fallen in the city in just 36 hours over the weekend, she said.
Officials at the briefing were quick to stress that they had been closely in touch with the athletes, informing them of the postponement soon after 04:00 local time (03:00 BST).
“We are all disappointed,” admitted Marisol Casado, the president of World Triathlon. But she was “quite confident” the event would take place.
That is in spite of the fact more heavy rain is forecast for the city at some point over the coming days, raising the prospect of further delays.
Officials insisted that downgrading the event to a duathlon was a last resort.
