Defending champion Jiri Prskavec clocks the fifth-fastest time, including two penalty seconds, which sees him finish more than three seconds slower than Great Britain's Joe Clarke.

If there was a roof on this place, it would have just been blown off by the French support, who out-do the Czech fans as they welcome home favourite Titouan Castryck.

He is being roared down the course - we are outdoors but this is absolutely deafening - and that helps him to third.

So, GB's Joe Clarke is the fastest qualifier for today's final. Do not miss it!

Jiri Prskavec, the reigning Olympic champion, was going well until he caught one of the upstream gates with his shoulder, getting a two-second penalty.

GB's Joe Clarke remains in pole position with just one paddler - Frenchman Titouan Castryck - left to go.

The way Jiri Prskavec came out for his first run was exciting. He is looking slightly steadier. You don't need the perfect run at this point.

I don't feel like he gave everything. He can spin the boat so quickly and he is looking smooth. There is more to come from him.

There is huge Czech support here for defending champion Jiri Prskavec, as if it was their own home Games, and he will now chase after Joe Clarke's leading time.

Stunned Swiatek left saddened by Olympic exitpublished at 15:24 British Summer Time 1 August

Losing at Roland Garros for the first time since 2021 is a bitter pill for Iga Swiatek to swallow.

The long-time world number one saw her 25-match winning streak on the Paris clay ended by China's Zheng Qinwen in the Olympics semi-finals earlier.

Swiatek was visibly upset when she tried to speak to broadcast journalists about an hour after the match and decided not to speak to written press - as she is entitled to do under Olympics rules.

"I'm sorry," she mouthed before hurriedly disappearing.

This is what the Olympics means to these athletes.

What a run from Joe Clarke.

Negative splits all the way down and no penalties. He's the fastest so far with a time of 89.51 seconds, so he's guaranteed a place in the final.

    Huge from Joe Clarke!

He has made a real statement there. We'll have to wait and see if that remains the fastest time in the semi-finals but that should give him a lot of confidence going into the final in around two hours.

The judges may take another look at that near-miss at gate 14 but, for now, he is top of the leaderboard and safely heading to the final.

    Here he comes!

Joe Clarke, back competing at an Olympic Games eight years after his triumphant debut in Rio, will now look to set up his shot at redemption after missing out on selection in Tokyo.

Clarke has said he perhaps won Olympic gold too early in his career but make no mistake, the fire has been re-lit and he is back for Paris 2024, where he will have double gold aspirations coming in as the kayak cross world champion.

With his rivals all making errors so far he will be confident of securing that top-12 placing required.

Huge cheers greet his name being announced and the Union Jack flags are being waved along the side of the course. Can he put down a marker here?

Can Carlos Alcaraz claw back this second set against Tommy Paul?

Yes he can. The Spaniard has made his way back to 5-5 against the American ninth seed. He was 4-1 down.

The singles is Alcaraz's main focus now, after he and Rafa Nadal lost in the men's doubles on Wednesday to USA's Austin Krajicek and Rajeev Ram.
