It's a long way back for Andy Murray and Dan Evans now. They're going to need something very special indeed if they are to turn this around.

As a side note, there is a truly incredible amount of splashing that goes on in a freestyle. Water all over the show, and yet somehow the swimmers look so effortless as they glide through. Not that I'm jealous.

This will be over in a flash!

Off they go and within a blink of an eye, Jordan Crooks of the Cayman Islands wins, Caeleb Dressel is second and home swimmer Maxime Grousset is third.

You can see with the Americans, they've grown up together, they've roomed together. You can see how comfortable they are on court. Maybe their tennis isn't always quite in sync but they're very easy together and that really helps.

We suspected this would be a tough match for Murray and Evans.

That's exactly how it is panning out.

The Brits are being munched in their service games and can't make enough of an impact on return.

When Fritz and Paul land first serves they're in bother.

A chorus of vocal support comes as the Brits finally get on the scoreboard in the fifth game.

Judging by the noise as Caeleb Dressel comes out, there are a lot of Americans in the La Defense Arena tonight.

Not quite as many as the French fans, though - they give Maxime Grousset a raucous reception as he walks out for the first men's 50m freestyle heat.

It's probably a little too late for a comeback in this first set, though.

The first semi-final of the men's 50m freestyle features defending Olympic champion Caeleb Dressel. The American, in lane one, holds the Games record of 21.07 seconds.

The competitors have rattled through the first round of the women's BMX racing quarter-finals.

Team GB's defending champion Bethany Shriever started well, coming first in heat three and earning a single point.

She'll race twice more tonight, with the racers with the lowest points total going through to the next round.

That's more like it from Andy Murray and Dan Evans, who claw their way to deuce.

It's not quite enough, though. Tommy Paul and Taylor Fritz make it through unharmed and the Britons' wait to get on the scoreboard goes on.

Gymnastics - women's all-around final

The nightmare of the Tokyo twisties has been firmly forgotten about for Simone Biles. That's the sixth Olympic gold of her career and her ninth Games medal in total.

Biles also becomes the first woman to win multiple Olympic all-around titles since Czech gymnast Vera Caslavska in 1964 and 1968.

That GOAT necklace came in handy.
