Thanks for joining us for day -1.

There has been plenty more drama in the men's rugby sevens with Fiji, South Africa, France and Australia reaching the semi-finals.

You can catch up with all the results from the women's football here.

We'll be back for more fun tomorrow when the opening ceremony takes place along the River Seine.

Around 300,000 people will watch from the banks of the Seine as a parade of some 10,000 athletes takes place not in a stadium, but on boats for each team.

No Olympic Games has held an opening ceremony like this before, so expect something completely different.

There is no sport scheduled at the Games on Friday, clearing the path for the ceremony to be the centre of attention.

The celebrations among the French at the rugby sevens tonight can only be described as... magnifique.

The hosts beat Argentina - who have become bitter rivals in the eyes of the French after the behaviour of the South American footballers - to reach the men's semi-finals.

Wing Aaron Grandidier, who was born in London to a French mother and English father, was one of the stars of the show with two tries.

He led the celebrations by running down the side of a stand and high-fiving as many jubilant supporters as he could after the final whistle.

And he was equally buzzing to speak to the BBC afterwards. Honestly, he was!

Incredible scenes at the Stade de France.

An unprecedented security operation is in place, with organisers also facing challenges over the cleanliness of the Seine, costs and the environmental impact of the Games.

Georgian shooter Nino Salukvadze will become the first woman – and only the second athlete – to compete in a 10th consecutive Olympic Games when qualifying begins for the women's 10m air pistol on Saturday.

Her bid for a second gold - 36 years after her first - and her fourth medal will begin after the first medal event of Paris 2024, the 10m air rifle mixed team final, concludes earlier in the day.

At the age of 55, Salukvadze will draw level with Canada's former equestrian show jumper Ian Miller, whose 10 Olympics spanned from 1972 to 2012.

Salukvadze won gold on her Games debut – in the 25m sporting pistol – and silver, in the 10m air pistol, as a 19-year-old at Seoul 1988, and completed the set 20 years later with a bronze medal in the 10m air pistol at Beijing 2008.

France appeared to be cruising at half-time as they were 3-0 ahead against Colombia, but the South Americans have fought back with a penalty from Catalina Usme and a goal from Manuela Pavi Sepulveda to leave it at 3-2 with about 20 minutes to go.

Emma Hayes looks set to guide the United States to an easy win as they are 3-0 ahead versus Zambia, who are down to 10 players following a red card in the first half.

Fiji are not accustomed to trailing. How will they respond here?

Zac Ward helps Ireland to extend their lead by rounding off a great team move with a dive into the tightest of tight spaces in the corner.

It's zero from three with the conversions from Mark Roche. Could that prove to be a big factor?

Oh my. Selestino Ravutaumada shrugs off five Ireland players in the process of making around 70 or 80 yards before offloading for Waisea Nacuqu to score.

    And now it's Terio Tamani.

Two tries in the space of 20 seconds turns the game on its head.

The 14 minutes are over but Ireland are fighting to keep the ball alive for as long as possible.

We go just over three minutes without a mistake from Ireland until it's dropped and kicked to touch by Fiji.

A test for the favourites but they come through. Fiji will be in the semi-finals.

Rugby sevens was introduced to the Olympics in 2016 and featured again in 2020 - Fiji won gold in the men's competition on both occasions.

Ireland are going to need something special to stop the free-flowing Pacific Islanders.

Iosefo Masi takes just a minute to get Fiji up and running.

Fine response from Ireland, though, with Chay Mullins bundling his way over.

Mullins strikes again on the stroke of half-time to give Ireland the lead.

    Upset on the cards?

France have added a third goal in their match against Colombia, with Marie-Antoinette Katoto getting her second of the game to put the hosts 3-0 up at half-time.

That is the same score in the other ongoing match too as the United States are crushing Zambia, who have also gone down to 10 players following a red card for Pauline Zulu.

Rodrigo Isgro gets Argentina on the board early in the second half and the kick is good too.

It's backs-against-the-wall stuff here for France but they are down to six men with Jordan Sepho sin-binned.

Argentina make use of the extra player with Marcos Moneta getting in at the corner.

    They couldn't, could they?

France win a penalty deep in Argentine territory with just seconds to go and it should be kicked to touch as the clock ticks down.

But Antoine Dupont has other ideas, drops a shoulder and darts for the try-line.

    Remarkable.

France will play South Africa in the semi-finals.

Those boos that greeted Argentina on to the field have persisted every time they've had the ball in the hand and it's sheer delight that can be heard whenever France get possession.

After a tense start with both sides playing some scrappy rugby, the roof comes off when France get three scores in quick succession.

Andy Timo has two tries to his name with Aaron Grandidier Nkanang also crossing the whitewash.

Argentina are crumbling in the midst of a hugely hostile atmosphere.

Trinity Rodman (pictured), who had earlier hit the crossbar, gave Hayes' side the lead after 17 minutes before two goals in the space of a minute from Mallory Swanson have left USA 3-0 up after 25 minutes.

Hosts France are also cruising to an opening three points as they lead Colombia 2-0 thanks to goals from Marie-Antoinette Katoto and Kenza Dali.

Germany beat Australia 3-0 earlier on, with Marina Hegering, Lea Schuller and Jule Brand scoring, while Brazil defeated Nigeria 1-0 thanks to Gabi Nunes' goal.

No surprise to hear boos greet the Argentina players as they stride out on to the field at the Stade de France.

It has been a common theme from the largely French crowd during the Pool stage and was inevitable once the two nations discovered they'd meet for a place in the semi-finals.

You could cut the tension with a knife.

    Argentina v France (20:30 BST)

This one is going to be lively. To put it mildly.

French fans have been angrily jeering Argentina in the Stade de France as a result of the simmering tension between the nations' football players.

Argentina's celebrations after beating France in the 2022 football World Cup final still linger long in the memory.

Then, last week a video emerged of Argentinian players singing about their French counterparts which the French Football Federation said included alleged "racist and discriminatory language".

Still, the fruity reception caught the Argentinian rugby players by surprise.

"I wasn't ready or prepared for that reception," captain Gaston Revol told me.

"But it's OK. We are enjoying the atmosphere of what sport brings - you can have the crowd in your favour or against us. in this case, they are against us but it's OK.

"We don't care about the controversy, it is the opinion of the crowd. We are trying to do our things and enjoy what is happening here. We love being here."
