How does the diving work?published at 10:04 British Summer Time 2 August

    Diving - men's synchro 3m springboard final

The event consists of eight pairs who do six dives from a 3m springboard, with all scores counting.

Each dive, which must be submitted prior, has a difficulty tariff with their execution being scored by the judges.

Each dive performed by an athlete must be from a different group: forward, backward, reverse, inward, twisting and, for 10m only, armstand.

The final rankings are determined by the combined points tally from each dive.

Any tied pairings at the end of the competition will share the ranking and/or medals.

The group of French fans up in the top of the stands that have giant cardboard cutouts of Jules Bouyer and Alexis Janard's heads win the award for most creative.

There's huge cheers for the French duo as they walk out - although the American fans to my left certainly rival them when Tyler Downs and Duncan Greg make their way out.

Plenty of Britons in too for Jack Laugher and Anthony Harding, unfurling the Union Jacks as the two walk beneath them. Laugher has his headphones on, while Harding looks to be taking in some more of the atmosphere.

Some of the major headlines so far today in Paris:

    • After the race walks yesterday, athletics at Paris 2024 has commenced in earnest with the opening events of the men's decathlon, while GB high jumper Morgan Lake is in qualifying action. Later this morning, 1500m runner Josh Kerr (10:05) and Dina Asher-Smith and Daryll Neita (100m, 10:50) will begin their Olympic campaigns.
    • We're under way in the second round of the golf as Japan's Hideki Matsuyami currently leads the pack on -8. Great Britain's Tommy Fleetwood put in a brilliant first round score to leave himself four shots off the lead with Ireland's Rory McIlroy on -3. Fleetwood will tee off at 11:44 BST.

And some events to look out for today:

    • Team GB will aim to win a medal in a fourth consecutive diving final in Paris when Anthony Harding and Jack Laugher compete in the men’s synchronised 3m springboard final - that starts shortly.
    • From 10.30 BST there are four rowing finals - the men's and women's pairs, and the men's and women's lightweight double sculls. Great Britain’s Tom George and Ollie Wynne-Griffith are first up in the men's pair final, while Emily Craig and Imogen Grant will go for a medal in the sculls.

What do abbreviations next to times/ scores mean?published at 09:58 British Summer Time 2 August

You may have noticed little two or three-letter abbreviations next to an athlete's score or time during this first week of the Olympics.

Now the athletics has begun, you are certainly likely to see them quite often. So, for the uninitiated, here is a quick guide to what they all mean...

    WR: World record

    OR: Olympic record

    PB: Personal best

    SB: Season's best

    DNF: Did not finish

    DQ: Disqualified

Adam Peaty will not take part in the mixed 4x100m medley relay heats on Friday morning, as Team GB begin the defence of their Olympic title.

Peaty, 29, was diagnosed with Covid-19 on Monday – a day after winning Olympic silver in the 100m breaststroke.

Missing the heats does not mean Peaty could not come in for the final on Saturday evening, should Team GB qualify.

He could also compete in the men’s 4x100m medley relay which begins on Saturday, if fit enough and the coaches wish to utilise him in that race.

James Wilby, who was 11th-fastest in the 100m breaststroke semi-finals and missed out on the final, will take on the breaststroke leg in Peaty’s absence with Kathleen Dawson, Joe Litchfield and Anna Hopkin making up the quartet.

One of the British squad’s best freestylers, Matt Richards, Tom Dean, Duncan Scott or James Guy, who won gold in the men’s 4x200m freestyle relay, will likely replace Litchfield if they qualify for the final.

Round one of the women's 100m takes place later this morning, when the medal contenders enter the competition.

But, French athletes aside, it doesn't seem to matter too much who is competing - the crowd are getting right behind every event.

France's Alex Jandard is first in action with partner Jules Bouyer - and poor Jandard went viral a few months back for an embarrassing slip.

Jandard was taking part in an exhibition at the inauguration of the Olympic Aquatic Centre when he slipped, bounced off the board and slapped into the water, right in front of French president Emmanuel Macron.

He took it with much better humour than most of us would have managed, going on to make a tutorial on how to make the best diving mistake you can.

It's well worth a watch, external if, like me, you're prone to a slip or two...

  19. Why purple and what makes an athletics track fast?published at 09:23 British Summer Time 2 August

    Image caption,

Organisers chose the colour purple to replace the Stade de France stadium’s former blue track in line with the Paris 2024 official colours.

To the casual observer one athletics track probably looks much like another.

But at the Olympic Games in Paris, it will be difficult to miss the purple track at the Stade de France.

Describing its colour as "audacious", Maurizio Stroppiana, whose company made the track, says it will help people "instantly recognise" the Paris Games.

It took 10 wet and cold weeks to lay the track at the Stade de France after the Rugby World Cup ended in October of last year.

"Finally, when we see it installed, it's absolutely beautiful," says Mr Stroppiana, whose Mondo Group, based in the Italian town of Alba, has made every Olympic track since 1976.

The company, named after its founder Edmondo Stroppiana, began making rubber bicycle tyres in post-war Italy, moving into tracks in 1972.

It says the Paris track is its fastest yet, 2% faster than Tokyo's in 2020.

Beneath the purple lies a rubber track with two layers. The lower level has honeycomb cells, where air absorbs the shock of your foot landing, then pushes out, feeding the energy back as your foot takes off.
