Kye Whyte has been taken from the course on a stretcher. You really don't like to see that. This is a brutal, brutal sport and it's the fourth crash we've seen tonight.

The Tokyo silver medalist had been struggling with a back injury which he said was aggravated last night after his three quarter-final runs. He didn't start well in that second run.

Let's hope that Whyte is OK, we wish him a speedy recovery.

That is a thing of beauty. Ben Proud, the humble British swimmer has delivered for years and years and he was just missing that medal and he's done in a quality time as well, just missing out on the gold.

'The most beautiful of technique'published at 19:41 British Summer Time 2 August

    Karen Pickering
Swimming & diving expert on BBC Radio 5 Live

Ben Proud was born in London but grew up in Malaysia and then he did his building I suppose in Plymouth college and then moved to Turkey and has been training over there.

And as he's gotten older his training has gotten smarter and he's done more land training and less pool training.

All the training he does in the pool is about the most beautiful of technique. You watch these guys and you think it's just power and splash but inside of that they're looking to be absolutely perfect and hydrodynamic through the water.

Ah that is lovely. He came for gold but a medal for Ben Proud couldn't be more deserved. He gives a big thumbs up to the British in the crowd.

He had won a medal at the worlds, Europeans and Commonwealths. Now he has that Olympic medal.

France's Florent Manaudou, meanwhile, is making the absolute most of this atmosphere. And it's just for bronze.

He crashes after the first set of ramps in the second of his semi-final runs and it's a heck of a tumble he takes.

The medics are out, the stretcher is out.

Let's hope this is not as serious as it looks.

The first race of the night is the men's 50m freestyle final, also known as the Splash and Dash.

It will crown the fastest man in the world across one length and Great Britain have a great medal chance.

Ben Proud is one of the most popular and admired members of the GB squad. He has won World Championship, Commonwealth and European gold but never a medal at the big chance.

    Is this his night?
