Both sides are managed by former Barcelona and Premier League players - although Thierry Henry and Javier Mascherano never played together.

Midfielder Mascherano joined Barca from Liverpool weeks after forward Henry left them for New York Red Bulls in the summer of 2010.

Mascherano, who won 147 caps for Argentina, played for West Ham as well as the Reds in England.

He won two gold medals in the Olympics, in 2004 and 2008, and has managed his country's under-20s since 2021.

Henry, who is Arsenal's all-time top scorer with 228 goals, scored 51 international goals in 123 games for France.

He has been France Under-21 boss since last year, and has previously been Belgium assistant and Monaco and Montreal Impact manager.

French journalist Julien Laurens on the men's football quarter-final between France and Argentina: "Massive day because it is against Argentina.

"We spoke a bit about it yesterday, Thierry Henry on the bench for France against Javier Mascherano who is the Argentina Under-23s coach as well.

"We have superstars all around the pitch like Alvarez for Manchester City and Alexandre Lacazette the former Arsenal striker and you have all this baggage and history between the two of them because of the 2022 World Cup and that most recent incident, the video of that racist song."

Argentina and France set for grudge Olympics matchpublished at 20:05 British Summer Time 2 August

    20:00 BST

France meet Argentina for a potential grudge match in Bordeaux in the men's Olympics football quarter-finals tonight.

There has been recent animosity between the teams after Argentina players were filmed singing a derogatory song about France's black players in the aftermath of winning the Copa America on 14 July.

It was similar to a song sung by Argentina fans during the 2022 World Cup in Qatar - a tournament in which the South Americans went on to beat France in the final.

At the Olympics, Argentina's rugby sevens players have been booed in each of their games by the home French fans.

"With everything that has happened recently, everyone in France was affected, so we will see what happens in the quarter-finals," said Jean-Philippe Mateta, who captained France in their win against New Zealand.

Musetti will face Felix Auger-Aliassime in the bronze medal match.

    Hockey - GB 0-2 Germany

Team GB are trailing at half-time in their final pool game against Germany in the men's hockey.

Germany have had a fine second quarter with two goals from Christopher Ruhr, the first a brilliant reverse hit and the second coming from a penalty flick.

GB's Will Calnan had found the net in the first quarter, but his strike was ruled out following a video referral after his shot deflected in off his foot.

Both nations are already through, although the winner of this tie plays Argentina, rather than India in the quarter-finals.

Amazing scenes at the Stade de France.

The decathletes were lined up ready to take on the 400m and the stadium announcer was calling repeatedly for quiet - but the French supporters just refused to obey!

With Leon Marchand going for gold in the pool, roars of Allez les Bleus echoed around the stadium and the cheers rang out as his latest triumph was confirmed.

Only then did the crowd quieten down and allow the action here to recommence. I've never seen anything like it.

    Easy peasy.

Beth Shriever is making absolute light work of this so far. She crosses the line in 34.297 seconds, way ahead of anyone else in her second semi-final heat.

This means that the defending Olympic champion won't meet her biggest rival - Saya Sakakibara of Australia - until the final, with both of them winning their two respective races so far.

What a mouth-watering prospect that is.

Sakakibara has just edged Shriever in terms of her times but how will they fare directly up against each other?
