Wigan Warriors' winning start to the season was ended at the Halliwell Jones Stadium as fired-up Warrington claimed a deserved local derby victory.

Tries from Tom Lineham and Ryan Atkins, aided by four kicks from Bryson Goodwin, carved a 16-0 lead against a Wigan side playing their first game since returning from down under.

But Warriors finished the stronger, scoring twice in the last quarter.

After Liam Marshall's try, Sam Tomkins then converted Tony Clubb's late try.

Wigan, twice Grand Final victors over Wire in 2013 and 2016, had won their first two Super League matches, beating Salford prior to victory over Hull during their two-match promotional trip to Australia.

Warrington, by contrast, had won only one of their first three, last weekend's 18-10 win at Widnes, but, with three ex-Warriors in their side - Kevin Brown, Jack Hughes and Dom Crosby - they were always likely to be well fired up.

Wire dominated a comparatively under-par Wigan from the first whistle, going ahead with the first of Bryson Goodwin's two successful penalties in only the second minute, after Clubb had taken out the returning Tyrone Roberts with his shoulder.

Goodwin also converted Lineham's third Super League try of the season for an 8-0 half-time lead, which he extended with an early second-half penalty.

He then missed a kick to take Wire 12 points clear, but, from the next play, Marshall made a mess of fielding a high ball. It unluckily rebounded off Willie Isa's knee and Atkins pounced on the loose ball to score. His 174th Super League try puts him fifth in the competition's 22-year history and atoned for letting off Wigan when he knocked on taking a low pass as he was about to cross the line just before the break.

But, just when it looked like Wigan might wilt after all their jet-setting, they rallied hearteningly. Marshall dived in brilliantly at the left corner and, although Tomkins missed his touchline kick, he landed his second opportunity when Clubb crossed in the final minute.

The only disappointment for Warrington was the loss of England second rower Ben Currie with a knee injury after 17 minutes while stand-off Kevin Brown did not return after taking a head knock on the hour.

Warrington coach Steve Price:

"We dominated the game for the 80 minutes. The scoreline wasn't a reflection of the game, especially in that first half. With the amount of possession we had, we should have come away with more points.

"But they're a quality football team, they've been a top-four Super League club for a lot of years now and it was good to get a result against them.

"Kevin is pretty good in the sheds at the momen. We'll have to go through the process in the week. We have a lot of trust in our medical team to do what is best. Benny Currie has a bit of a problem with his knee so he'll be sent away for scans. I don't think it's a major concern."

Wigan coach Shaun Wane:

"It was nothing to do with that (jetlag). I just thought we weren't good enough. They started the game with some energy and finished their sets far better than us, which gave them field position.

"We were trying to come out of our end all the time and it took some juice out of us. We couldn't get out of our own half and our last kick wasn't good enough."

"They will have been a bit disappointed at half-time with the amount of possession they had. It was two tries apiece but it was a false score. They were better than that."
