George Williams scored Wigan's fourth try against Warrington at Magic Weekend

Wigan produced a dominant second-half display to beat Warrington and extend their winning run to eight games.

Wolves, who had won their previous 10 games, played a big part in the first-half arm-wrestle, scoring twice through Harvey Livett and Stefan Ratchford.

But Wigan also scored two tries through Sam Powell and Sam Tomkins, who kicked four goals, to lead at half-time.

It was one-way traffic after the break as Wigan kept Warrington scoreless to rack up 22 unanswered points.

Warrington have been irresistible at times in their 10-game winning run but errors proved costly against a Wigan side who had seven victories in a row of their own.

The warm sun had radiated over St James' Park all day but those temperatures had cooled by the time the teams emerged onto the field.

Not that it stopped tempers flaring, as former Wigan winger Josh Charnley enjoyed a hot reception from some of his former team-mates, and Kevin Brown was involved in a mini-scuffle with Joel Tomkins.

If the first period was an arm-wrestle, then the second was purely Shaun Wane's side flexing their muscles, with a procession of tries for John Bateman, George Williams, Liam Marshall and Tom Davies capping a convincing win.

Sam Tomkins, who announced his move to Catalans at the end of the season in midweek, was influential throughout, while Charnley's replacements in the Warriors new guard of outside backs Marshall and Davies, and the quality of Morgan Escare, were tangible evidence that the loss of a superstar need not be reason for panic at Wigan moving forward.

Wigan coach Shaun Wane:

"That's our best win this year, but it's very hard for me to be satisfied. I want to be happy with it but there's still lots of areas we need to improve on. I always dwell towards them.

"We've beaten a fantastic team there, Warrington are a class team and well coached. We'll be meeting a different team in two weeks' time (in the Challenge Cup quarter-finals), I've got no question about that.

"But I'm going to enjoy today. It was an outstanding win."

Warrington head coach Steve Price:

"We'd been playing some really good football and were turning things around but today we didn't come to the races. It was hugely disappointing.

"Full credit to Wigan. I thought they played some really good football. We're a much better footy team than that, I know that. That's not Warrington Wolves out there today.

"We'll dust ourselves off and have a lot of hard work to do ahead of an important game against Hull next week."
