Hull FC secured their second derby win of the season by keeping a spirited Hull KR at arms' length in the final game of Magic Weekend in Newcastle.

The Black and Whites led 24-10 at half-time as four tries to two helped them pull away after a tit-for-tat start.

Keiren Moss's hat-trick of tries gave Rovers' supporters hope of a comeback.

However, tries for Hull pair Jack Logan and Jake Connor settled the St James' Park contest, with Tommy Lee's effort proving mere consolation.

The return of the Hull derby to Magic Weekend after a missed season revived memories of past last-gasp drama. But this was an at-times muted contest that lacked fire and brimstone despite a partisan Hull crowd for the final game of the weekend on Tyneside.

Injuries had taken their toll on both sides, in particular forcing Black and Whites centre Kirk Yeaman to come out of retirement. And, to compound their problems, both FC coach Lee Radford and Rovers boss Tim Sheens saw Josh Griffin and Junior Vaivai limp off respectively.

Moss crossed out wide early on to put the Robins ahead. But Scott Taylor then picked the ball up off a freakish crossbar bounce to touch down and Jamie Shaul scooted over for a second before Moss ran in his second.

Liam Harris's debut score, courtesy of smart footwork, followed by a second for Shaul put the Airlie Birds in a strong position at the break.

Moss completed his treble in the corner, although it was not the spark Rovers were looking for as the game slowed and the atmosphere cooled.

But, with the game still in the balance, Connor created a score for Logan out wide and then danced through himself to confirm the Black and Whites' seventh successive derby win - and a fourth in their last five Magic Weekend meetings.

That started the Airlie Birds' party which not even Lee's late grounding and a messy late spat between the two teams could spoil.

"It was an ugly win but where we're at in terms of who's missing and changes to our spine, we'll take any win.

"I've just been told we're level on points with Warrington now and unbelievably we've got the third best attack in the comp, which is crazy when you think about it.

"I'll continue to take ugly wins from now until we get some blokes back."

Hull KR head coach Tim Sheens:

"There's not much between us and Salford - two wins, so there's that little ray of hope that we live by.

"My main worry at the moment is getting some of our better players back on the park."
