Wakefield Trinity coach Daryl Powell told BBC Sport pre-match:

"It’s a great opportunity for us. We know Leigh are going to play well so we know we’ve got to be outstanding if we’re going to win tonight.

"I think all the pressure is on Leigh. They have to win tonight, for us we just have to play the way that we play.

"They are strong team all round - Lachlan Lam is a real threat - I think the packs great. I think Bailey Hodgson has been a revelation but we feel that we can beat anybody the way that we play."

  5. 'Never say never' Powell says over Wakefield's hopespublished at 19:52 BST

Compare and contrast Wakefield's sixth-placed finish this term with a total of 15 wins and 30 points to that of their most recent bow in the top flight in 2023 which resulted in just four wins, eight points and a bitter drop into the Championship.

They travel to Leigh knowing that they are just two games from a Grand Final - some contrast to the perilous state they were in just two years ago - and coach Daryl Powell sees no reason why his side cannot cause an upset on Friday and beyond.

"I see an opportunity for us to go and do something special. You never say never in sport. You look around and there's been unbelievable things done over the years," Powell told BBC Radio Leeds.

"I recognise it will be a tough challenge for us but I do think the experience of playing a play-off game, the feel of it, the intensity of the environment, everything that it stands for is another tick in the box of where we're going."

Leigh boss Adrian Lam is particularly pleased that two sides that have historically not challenged for major honours until recently will face off tonight.

"It's been great that they've made the six. I've congratulated Daryl [Powell]. I love it when there's different things in Super League such as Leigh being third and Wakefield being sixth and Hull KR winning the minor Premiership," he told BBC Radio Manchester.

"I think that's great for rugby league and this country.

"They've done a really good job to force their way into that six spot and it's off the back of some hard work this year."

  7. Two sides with momentumpublished at 19:47 BST

    Leigh v Wakefield (20:00 BST)

Even as recent as three years ago you would have been forgiven for thinking that these two sides wouldn't cause much trouble in the upper echelons of Super League.

But the fact Leigh and Wakefield are just 160 minutes away from a possible Grand Final tells you everything you need to know about the crest of the wave they are riding.

Adrian Lam has steered Leigh to promotion to Super League in 2022, the Challenge Cup the following season and play-off places in the three successive campaigns they have played in the top flight since their return.

As for Wakefield, having stormed their way back in to Super League for this season, Daryl Powell has guided them to an impressive sixth-placed finish.
