For England, they now look ahead to a three-match series against Australia in 2025 - potentially on home soil, what an occasion that would be - ahead of the World Cup in the southern hemisphere in 2026.

Samoa meanwhile will aim for more competitive action in the new year, potentially through participation in the Pacific Cup.

  3. 'The difference today was Farnworth'published at 16:46 Greenwich Mean Time 2 November

    FT: England 34-16 Samoa

Samoa head coach Ben Gardiner, speaking to BBC TV: "The difference today was Herbie Farnworth. He was brilliant. In the two games, he was the player who stood up.

"I thought we did well to stay in the game and came out positively in the second half, but we weren’t good enough today. We did a lot better at the start, then there were a few interesting decisions. It’s harder to play with 12, but that’s the decision and you have to roll with it.

"The referee’s officiating the rules and that’s what he’s there to do.

"We had a number of guys unavailable for this tour, so we blooded a few players. That’s part of our process working towards the 2026 World Cup. I think we’re in a reasonable place. I’m disappointed with the loss but it’s the bigger picture we’re looking at."

To beat the best teams in the world you need a half-back [Harry Smith] who can read a game.

The balance is perfect you have a ball-controlling half-back, but then you have George Williams, who is undoubtedly one of the best half-backs in the world.

Shaun Wane, England head coach, speaking to BBC One: "I'm happy. Two-nil. I'm not overly happy with how we played today but we got the win. All credit to Samoa.

"Herbie Farnworth has been the standout in the series and he's a really good person and professional and a credit to the NRL.

"I just want us to keep performing well and show we're proud to play for our country. We beat Tonga last year 3-0 and got this, people will start sitting up and see that we can play."

Everything Herbie Farnworth does has intensity and high quality. There was some world-class efforts throughout the game and he sets other people up as well.

If we are going to beat Australia we will get three or four moments and he will be the heartbeat of those moments.

    FT: England 34-16 Samoa

England's player of the match Herbie Farnworth, speaking to BBC One: "Can't do any better than 2-0. We started a bit shaky, but the boys got back to the game-plan so I'm happy and it's good to be back home too.

"I am happy with the two [tries] and a try assist.

"Obviously a new group put together we were a bit rusty, but you can see the boys gelling and we are working hard together. It is looking promising for next year for the Ashes and the year after for the World Cup.

"They are ranked number one for a reason. We feel we have the talent and hard work to put up a good test."

It hasn't been a perfect Test series from England, but they have shown enough quality to suggest they will really give Australia a good run next year.

George Williams, Herbie Farnworth and Matty Ashton have been particular stand-outs over the last week.

  10. 'England have X-factor players'published at 16:30 Greenwich Mean Time 2 November

Samoa may well be wondering what might have been had they made a quicker start in the first fixture, or if they had not been reduced to 12 men after a debatable yellow card for Junior Pauga today.

In the end, if you are not at full capacity for 80 minutes, you should not expect to win a Test match.

Two high quality Test matches full of entertaining rugby.

Two, ultimately, comfortable wins for England. Not without difficulty, but they were clearly the better side in both matches.

This game is stretched to breaking point. Francis Molo nearly cuts down the middle, but is denied.

We then have a flash point as Jarome Luai's momentum sees him knee slide into Morgan Knowles, who really takes exception to that. Players of both sides rush in but we don't have a fully fledged brawl.

    Ultimately, it fizzles into nothing.

Herbie Farnworth is desperate for his hat-trick. Again his fleet feet skip through tackles, right to the line where the collar of his shirt is stretched wide.

Farnworth almost spider-walks over the line, but cannot quite make it.

It's good that Samoa remain buoyant and enthused, and it was a good try - another clever kick from Luai. It's a fairer reflection of the game.
