Glasgow Warriors won the 1872 Cup for the fourth time in five years

Glasgow's 1872 Cup triumph over Edinburgh was the ideal start to 2012 for Warriors coach Sean Lineen, even if the match itself was unspectacular.

"It was not a great game to watch, a typical derby affair," he said after Glasgow's 17-12 win at Firhill secured the trophy 40-35 on aggregate.

"It's a pity we couldn't give the fans a better game, but the result is right.

"I am delighted with the fantastic team spirit. The guys are working hard. I am really proud of them."

Munster's defeat by Ulster on 30 December meant that Glasgow's win propelled them to third place in the Pro12 league table.

They have now won seven and drawn two of their 12 matches to date, with this latest success taking them to a club record of eight league games unbeaten.

Further, the 1872 Cup success was their fourth in five years over their old rivals and was watched by their biggest-ever home support - a crowd of 8,852 paid to see the New Year's Day action.

"It's a good place to be at the beginning of the new year, but there is a long way to go," said Lineen of the Glasgow's league position ahead of their meeting with Scarlets.

"We look forward to training next week and Llanelli on Saturday in the league.

"And we've got the Heineken Cup on the horizon as well.

"With the strength of our squad, we have really good competition for places.

"That makes the coaches' job on the one hand easier, but on the other hand, harder."

Lineen had mixed feelings as he continued his assessment of the match.

"It was disappointing in some parts, but it's all about winning," he told BBC Scotland.

"We are putting some good passages together, but we've got to work out how to get quicker ball.

"We started the first half quite well yet our errors were all unforced.

"Guys were dropping ball and kicking the ball out whereas, for Edinburgh, we actually had to force errors on them with our defence.

"The set-piece was in our control for large periods of the game. That's where the win was fought.

"No tries for Edinburgh - that's good. I was disappointed about the bonus point at the end.

"Phil Godman got the drop-goal over. That was a bit sloppy."
