Esher have appointed former Leicester and Harlequins centre Ollie Smith as their new head coach.

The 29-year-old, who coached the Surrey club's backs last season, replaces Mike Schmid, who has been appointed as chief executive at Molesey Road.

Smith will be assisted by former Saracens second row Kris Chesney, who is set to leave Toulon at the end of the season.

"I am hugely excited about what lies ahead," said Smith.

Chesney, 38, will be registered to play in National League One next season following Esher's relegation from the Championship.

Esher chairman of rugby John Inverdale added: "It has taken us a long time to sift through the many options and permutations.

"Ollie and Kris bring huge experience of top-class rugby to the club and we are all looking forward to what the next season will bring."

Meanwhile Jonny Hylton, Ian Kench and Peter Synott have all signed new one-year deals.
