Glasgow continued their recent dominance over Edinburgh with victory in a patchy affair at Scotstoun.
Number eight Josh Strauss scored the only try of the match after some excellent build-up play.
That was arguably the one moment of real quality but Glasgow still moved above Munster to top the Pro12 briefly before Ospreys won later on Saturday.
Duncan Weir kicked 11 points for Glasgow, with Sam Hidalgo-Clyne and Tom Heathcote replying with penalties.
Unbeaten in the last six meetings with their rivals from the capital, heavy favourites Glasgow went behind in the early stages after Hidalgo-Clyne punished an offside offence with his boot.
Weir - playing instead of Finn Russell at fly-half - levelled amid fierce physical exchanges then nudged the hosts ahead with an excellent penalty from 40 metres.
In typical derby style, free-flowing rugby was scarce and try-scoring opportunities were at a premium. But, after a tight 35 minutes, Glasgow struck.
Weir opened up the Edinburgh defence with a clever cross-field chip to Sean Lamont and the wing - playing his 100th league match for Warriors - ploughed through a weak Tom Brown tackle before off-loading to Peter Horne. He, in turn, fed Strauss to gallop clear.
Weir added the extras to give Glasgow a 13-3 lead at the break.
Edinburgh responded early in the second-half with a break from fly-half Greig Tonks.
Then, after Glasgow conceded a penalty from the subsequent ruck, Heathcote knocked over the kick to reduce the gap to seven points.
Alan Solomons' side were now in the ascendency, nullifying Glasgow's dangerous runners, but their lack of attacking options meant they rarely threatened the try-line.
Warriors introduced the Fijian pair of Leone Nakarawa and Niko Matawalu to provide the spark missing from their play in the first hour.
And Matawalu - who this week announced that he is to join Bath in the summer - cut through Edinburgh and exchanged passes with DTH van der Merwe before gliding over for the touchdown. However, referee George Clancy ruled the final pass to be forward.
Weir knocked over another penalty with 10 minutes remaining to stretch Glasgow's lead.
And, although he sent another attempt wide late on, the hosts had already secured a sixth consecutive inter-city derby win ahead of the return at Murrayfield next week.
