Cornish Pirates boss Ian Davies is hopeful winger Matt Evans will extend his contract at the Championship club.

The Canada international has featured just six times this season because of injury, but scored a drop-goal in his first start since October as the Pirates ended Bristol's winning streak.

"He's a top player for us and hopefully we can keep hold of him for next year after the World Cup," Davies said.

Evans joined the Pirates in 2011 and his current deal runs out this summer.

The Salisbury-born back, previously with Newport Gwent Dragons, played against New Zealand and Japan at the last World Cup.

And Davies said it was Evans who inspired his team-mates at half-time as they ended Bristol's 19-game winning streak in all competitions, costing them top spot in the Championship.

"He spoke brilliantly at half-time, it's great to have him back on the field, he's such a leader for us," Davies told BBC Radio Cornwall.
