Guernsey RFC go bottom on league after Bury St Edmunds loss

Guernsey RFC slipped back to the foot of National Three London after losing 23-14 at leaders Bury St Edmunds.

Glen Walters' try gave Guernsey a 7-3 advantage in the first half, but Bury hit back before the break to lead 8-7.

It was a lead that the home side never let go of, despite Robin Le Cocq's try.

The defeat, coupled with wins for nearest rivals Tring and CS Rugby 1863, sees Guernsey drop to the bottom of table with six games left to play this season.

Tring won 26-8 at second-placed London Irish Wild Geese, while Rugby were 21-17 winners at fellow strugglers Westcliff.

"Performance-wise we were pretty good," head coach Jordan Reynolds told BBC Radio Guernsey.

"For about 85% of the game we showed some real structure and dominance, I think we just failed to convert that into points and that was probably the difference.

"We threw a lot at Bury St Edmunds and fair play to them, that's why they're at the top, their defence was sound for long periods of the game and we found it difficult to break them down.

"We're pretty happy with the performance, but we got absolutely no rewards for that performance, and that's a big problem for us at the moment," he added.
