Gavin Cattle: Cornish Pirates coach still getting used to being in charge

Gavin Cattle has had two spells as a player at Cornish Pirates

Former scrum-half Gavin Cattle says he is still trying to get used to his role in charge of the Cornish Pirates team.

Cattle and prop Alan Paver have taken over running the side for the new season after director of rugby Ian Davies left in order to cut costs.

"Coming straight into coaching from playing the one advantage is that you're still in touch with the players and how they feel," Cattle said.

"But you've got to be careful not to get too emotionally involved."

Neither Cattle nor Paver - who will continue to be part of the playing squad - had any coaching experience prior to their appointments by Davies at the Penzance-based Championship club in 2014.

"Myself and Paves are very much on the same level as the players, but if somebody is stepping out of line we've got a good senior group who pull them up sharpish," he told BBC Radio Cornwall.

"If they're not recognising it then that's where myself or Paves step in. We've got a hardworking, honest group, and if we can keep it that way only good things can happen."
