Duncan Hodge registered his first win as interim head coach of Edinburgh against Treviso

Interim Edinburgh head coach Duncan Hodge was pleased that his side "put down a marker" with a comprehensive 45-10 win over Treviso at Murrayfield.

Hodge, who stepped into the top job last week following the departure of Alan Solomons, watched his side run in seven tries to mark his first home match in charge with a victory.

"That was a big result for us," Hodge told BBC Scotland.

"Tonight, at home, we had to put down a marker and the boys largely did that."

Tries from Damien Hoyland (two), Tom Brown (two), Hamish Watson, Magnus Bradbury and Blair Kinghorn secured Edinburgh's first bonus-point of the season.

Hoyland and Watson crossed for converted tries inside the opening seven minutes to set them on their way.

"That was probably just the shot of confidence we needed," Hodge admitted, after four defeats in their opening five matches. "There's still a lot to work on but we're pretty happy with seven tries and a win in front of our home fans.

"My main message was that things won't just happen. They're below us in the league, we've not played well but we need to make things happen. We have to be positive, we have to affect the game ourselves. We can't sit back and wait for other people.

"Obviously it's been a difficult eight or nine days and it's got even more difficult this week with a few injuries. There are a lot of positives in there so we're pretty happy overall."

Hodge hopes the win can signal the start of a winning run, with a trip to Romania next weekend for a European Challenge Cup match against Timisoara Saracens.

"The lift just winning a game of rugby can give a team and give this group of players, it's a hard thing to put your finger on. Hopefully when we rock up (for training) on Monday we'll be ready to go again. They should be proud of some of what they did tonight and take confidence from that.

"We've got to look forward to another positive performance next week. We might be carrying a couple of injuries, but a bit like tonight it gives some other people an opportunity. That's what happened tonight with some of the young Scots on the bench. It's just great to see them play."
