Championship: Jersey Reds 24-19 Yorkshire Carnegie

Former Scotland international Jack Cuthbert scored Jersey's third try

Jersey Reds moved to the brink of the Championship play-off zone with a memorable narrow win over second-placed Yorkshire Carnegie.

Nick Haining and Jordan Davies went over for the hosts in the first half, either side of Ben West's try.

Carnegie forwards Mike Cusack and Dean Schofield both scored from mauls to level the score.

But Jack Cuthbert got the winner for the Reds - their first triumph over the Yorkshire side since 2012.

The game was Jersey's first home league fixture in nearly eight weeks and they started superbly, dominating possession in the first 15 minutes and eventually getting their reward when Haining crashed over.

The visitors were soon ahead though as lock West touched down between the posts for a converted try.

Reds fly-half Callum Sheedy put his side ahead again with a penalty, before Davies ended a Jersey counter-attack on the stroke of half time to see the hosts 13-7 in front at the break.

Experienced Carnegie prop Cusack went over from a maul to narrow the gap, but Sheedy's penalty re-established a seven point lead for the hosts.

The Leeds-based side pulled themselves level at 19-19 though, when Schofield finished off another powerful rolling maul.

With prop Lewis Boyce in the sin-bin for an illegal tackle, the Reds made the man advantage count when full-back Cuthbert was found in space wide on the right.

A series of Carnegie line-outs and some nervy Jersey clearances made for a tense finale, but the hosts clung on for one of their greatest Championship wins.

Carnegie take a losing bonus-point and remain in second spot, while Jersey's victory takes them to within one point and one place of the top four.

Reds head coach Harvey Biljon told BBC Radio Jersey:

"In my coaching career it's got to be in my top five.

"The players recognised what a big week it was and I honestly believe they were warriors out there tonight.

"That Yorkshire team was pretty physical, pretty big, and our boys fronted up and I'm really proud of them."
