Wasps continued their recent Premiership resurgence with a bonus-point win over Newcastle Falcons.

The home backs made a scintillating start, Christian Wade scoring two tries and Kyle Eastmond one to put the hosts 19-3 up inside the opening 15 minutes.

Newcastle rallied as Sean Robinson went over to narrow the gap at half-time.

But the home side continued to impress as James Haskell, Gabiriele Lovobalavu and Josh Bassett all crossed for second-half scores.

Wasps' win, just their fourth in eight league games this season, helped last season's beaten Premiership finalists leapfrog Newcastle, Harlequins and Northampton into sixth place.

They blitzed the Falcons early on, Wade darting over in the left corner twice in the first 12 minutes after great flowing play from the Wasps midfield, with a Toby Flood penalty intersecting the two scores.

Eastmond, playing for the first time since rupturing his Achilles against Gloucester in February, got the third try after a lovely dummy opened up a gap in the Falcons line and Jake Cooper-Woolley should have got their fourth, but dropped the ball as he reached over to score.

Robinson's try ensured Newcastle's deficit was in single figures going into the break, when Eastmond withdrew, having suffered a head injury in the last minute of the half after colliding with Sinoti Sinoti.

Wasps turned the screw after the restart, Haskell smashing over before the impressive Willie le Roux had a score chalked off for a forward pass.

Fiji international Lovobalavu got his first Premiership try after a fantastic run from scrum-half Joe Simpson, before Bassett added late gloss, running from deep inside his own half to coast over for the sixth try.

Wasps director of rugby Dai Young:

"In the first 25 minutes, we were excellent, although we then took our foot off the pedal a little bit, which allowed Newcastle to get back into the game. The momentum was then with them.

"To score so many points is only going to help our confidence as a team - it was a really good performance.

"There's obviously things to work on and not everything went to plan, but we've been building nicely over the last couple of weeks."

Newcastle director of rugby Dean Richards:

"We didn't play with enough accuracy or respect the ball as much as we should have done.

"Our lack of defensive structure with players stepping out of the line also didn't help, and hopefully we'll not play that badly twice.

"They had a lot more composure in their game - on paper they looked a little bit stronger than us and it showed."
