Bryce Heem's hat-trick of tries helped Worcester to their first league win of the season against Northampton and off the bottom of the Premiership table.

Stephen Myler and Jono Lance exchanged early penalties before a magical run by Worcester's Ryan Mills released Heem for the first of two first-half tries.

Josh Adams extended the lead with a stylish score shortly after the break.

Ben Foden got one back for Saints soon after before Jamie Gibson and Heem went over for Warriors in the final minutes.

That gave the hosts their first league win in eight attempts this season and saw them leapfrog London Irish at the foot of the table.

Saints dominated the first 10 minutes with 97% possession but only had Myler's penalty to show for it before they lost influential England centre Luther Burrell to a head injury.

That galvanised Worcester, who saw talismanic half-back duo Francois Hougaard and Mills line up together for the first time this season with great effect.

Mills set up the first try before Hougaard's pass released Heem to barrel over from 10 metres for the second, scored while Saints were down to 14 men after Rob Horne was sin-binned for a high tackle.

Adams put Warriors further ahead with a scintillating run that began 10 metres inside his own half and ended after an intricate exchange of passes with Chris Pennell to circumvent Harry Mallinder's last-ditch challenge.

Foden's try, just moments after he had replaced Ken Pisi, gave Saints hope, but Worcester defended excellently in the final minutes before Gibson eventually went over.

Heem completed his hat-trick in stoppage time - with Horne getting his second yellow card for a tip-tackle in the build-up - to seal Warriors' bonus-point victory.

Worcester director of rugby Gary Gold:

"We've stuck together during some very tough times. We haven't got the results we wanted but we've played some very good rugby in the lead-up to this win as we were unlucky to come away from Gloucester and Harlequins without winning.

"We knew we had to match Northampton physically and we did that very well.

"We knew we had to take our opportunities against them, which we did as we only had three entries in their half in the first 35 minutes but we scored twice.

"We wanted to play with a quick tempo but the difficult conditions didn't make it easy to do so, but we stopped their drive very effectively."

Northampton director of rugby Jim Mallinder:

"They were very passionate. It didn't surprise us but there are no redeeming features for us as we lacked intensity all over the pitch.

"It was grim as our discipline was very poor in the first half as we gave away eight penalties and went down to 14 men.

"Then they scored early in the second half, when we badly missed a tackle, but although we scored a couple of tries, we were never in control and couldn't play off the front foot."
