Worcester Warriors flanker Sam Lewis has scored five tries in 29 appearances for the club

Worcester flanker Sam Lewis has signed a new, undisclosed-length 'long-term' contract with the Premiership club.

The 27-year-old Welshman, signed from Ospreys in 2015, has become a key man since recovering from a shoulder injury that marred his first full season.

"It is important to retain the players who will be able to take this club forward," said Warriors director of rugby Gary Gold.

"To start that process by securing the signature of Sam is hugely positive."

Gold is leaving Warriors at the end of the season to take up a job as coach of the United States international side.

But, by becoming the first Warriors player this season to agree new terms, the club stressed that Lewis' commitment "illustrates their desire to ensure their best players remain at Sixways in the long term".

"When I was offered a new contract I didn't have to think twice," said Lewis. "The club stuck by me during a difficult stage of my career when I was injured for a long time and I want to repay that loyalty."

After his mid-season arrival from home-town club Ospreys in March 2015, Swansea-born Lewis made a name for himself at Worcester with a hat-trick in Warriors' Championship play-off semi-final victory against London Scottish.

But, after missing the entire 2015-16 season with the shoulder injury that eventually needed surgery, he has become a regular since his return.
