Glasgow beat Newcastle 27-17 in their European Challenge Cup last 16 tie.

Johnny Matthews ended a six-pass move and Kyle Steyn went over as Glasgow led 12-0 after seven minutes while Josh McKay went in under the posts for a third Warriors try after half an hour.

Will Montgomery's pick and go try for Falcons 11 minutes after the break cut the gap to single figures.

But Steyn's second try sealed the win before Joel Hodgson got one back with 15 minutes to go at Kingston Park.

Glasgow's victory was the first time they had played Newcastle in a competitive game in the professional era.

Having won just one of their Champions Cup pool matches this season - a 22-7 win over Exeter at Scotstoun in December - Glasgow dropped into the Challenge Cup knockout stages for their first campaign in the lower-tier tournament since 2007.

They will travel to French side Lyon - who were 31-17 winners over Worcester - in the quarter-finals as they hope to avoid a repeat of their defeat at the same stage by Saracens 15 years ago.

Should the Warriors progress, they could face Scottish rivals Edinburgh in the semi-finals - they host Bath on Saturday evening for the chance to play Wasps at home in the last eight.
