That really was champagne rugby, and the good mood around Murrayfield has returned.

Darcy Graham then counter-rucks and overturns possession. Another mood-lifter.

I've never seen anyone so desperate for a try, by the way.

    Arron Reed

That is incredible from Reed - two in two minutes!

Matt Currie's defensive pressure wins Scotland the ball and Adam Hastings demands the ball on the left.

He holds and holds... then puts Matt Currie through. He pops to Reed, who sidesteps between two defenders and speeds away.

Superb, scintillating play, and no wonder Reed goes over with a huge smile on his face.

  4. converted try

Converted try SCOTLAND 45-14 Portugalpublished at 60 mins

    Arron Reed

This time, Scotland's throw is better and they use the backs.

Adam Hastings whips a long pass out to Tom Jordan, who leaps to gather and slings another huge ball to Reed on the wing.

Given a few yards to burn, he speeds over in the corner. No second invitation needed.

  5. Postpublished at 58 mins

    Scotland 38-14 Portugal

Scotland win a throw but Paddy Harrison chucks it away - his third loss today. The hosts' set-piece is faltering big time.

George Horne is then thrown around like a rag doll by Pedro Vicente and immediately replaced by Jamie Dobie.

Elsewhere, Matt Currie is on for Rory Hutchinson - he impressed today.

  6. Postpublished at 56 mins

    Scotland 38-14 Portugal

This is the biggest points tally Portugal have ever scored against one of the home nations.

That might worry Gregor Townsend, and defence coach Steve Tandy, just a little.

  7. converted try

Converted try Scotland 38-14 PORTUGALpublished at 55 mins

Portugal are enjoying a good spell in Scotland territory here, and now they have a scrum on the 5m line.

The scrum crumbles, and Portugal get another chance.

They'll do so with an entirely new front row. Abel da Cunha, Pedro Vicente, and Antonio Prim enter, and immediately pulverise the Scottish pack.

Samuel Marques grabs from the back and plunges over the line.

    Scotland 38-7 Portugal

Portugal disguise their throw and Nicholas Martins leaps forward to get the ball. Was he taken in the air, though?

No, play goes on. Scotland are living very dangerously here.

  9. Postpublished at 51 mins

    Scotland 38-7 Portugal

    Time off.

Portugal were breaking, Darcy Graham stuck out a hand and knocked the ball on. Was it a deliberate knock on? Did it stop a try-scoring opportunity?

No, says referee Takehito Namekawa. Just a penalty.

  10. Postpublished at 49 mins

    Scotland 38-7 Portugal

Scotland go to the bench for the first time, replacing their try-scoring props and lock Alex Craig.

Rory Sutherland, Elliot Millar Mills* and Ewan Johnson are on.

*The tighthead has Millar-Mills on his shirt, with a hyphen. I'm sure he's said himself there's not one. We'll bring you more when we have it.

  11. Postpublished at 49 mins

    Scotland 38-7 Portugal

Darcy Graham is back to his feet and almost put away on the wing by a flat Rory Hutchinson pass - but no luck, as it's ruled to be forward.

A very similar feel to this second half as the first. Messy, little cohesion, and little consistent quality.

  12. Postpublished at 46 mins

    Scotland 38-7 Portugal

Darcy Graham is smashed again on the near side, and stays down. Will that try record evade him today?

Possession continues to change hands quickly and Scotland's ill-discipline haunts them again as Portugal win a penalty and kick into the 22m.

  13. try

Try SCOTLAND 38-7 Portugalpublished at 44 mins

    Jamie Bhatti

George Horne steals the ball and hares away from a few Portuguese defenders, can he make it all the way to the line?

No! He's hauled down a few yards short. Arron Reed tries to go over but he's held up too.

A few phases later, Bhatti goes over and Scotland have their sixth.

A first Scotland try for the loosehead prop.

  14. Kick-offpublished at 40 mins

    Scotland 33-7 Portugal

And we're back for the second 40 minutes, as the sun sets on Edinburgh.

I'm sure it won't be long until we see Freddy Douglas - some of us for the very first time.

  16. 'Too complicated' from Scottish attackpublished at 16:06 Greenwich Mean Time

    HT: Scotland 33-7 Portugal

    Chris Paterson
    Former Scotland international on Sportsound

There were three or four interceptions [before Stafford McDowall's try] which was symptomatic of the game.

Scotland got control of the game by giving Portugal the ball and saying 'you do something'. Ten or twelve phases of defence brought a structure and a calm to their play.

Scotland look for that ball out the back too often, they're trying to do something too complicated.

  17. 'A little bit disorganised'published at 16:03 Greenwich Mean Time

    HT: Scotland 33-7 Portugal

    Peter Wright
    Former Scotland prop on Sportsound

It was a little bit disorganised, but there was enough to see when Scotland got it right, they got there.

A lot of Scotland's play was down to Portugal's line speed, their defensive shape, they didn't commit too many to the breakdown.

They've missed something like 19 tackles but it doesn't seem like that, it looked like they were nailing their tackles.

But they've tired and Scotland started getting through.

  18. 'Like a bad basketball match'published at 16:02 Greenwich Mean Time

    HT: Scotland 33-7 Portugal

    Tom English
BBC Scotland's chief sports writer on Sportsound

For much of the game, it was frantic and a total mess.

There was no shape to it, it was like a bad basketball match. It was all over the place.

Scotland will probably get another five or six in the second half, but it's not been hugely impressive so far.

  19. Half-time Scotland 33-7 Portugalpublished at 15:59 Greenwich Mean Time

Plenty for Scotland to think about after that first half.

They've got five tries to their name, but for spells they found it very difficult to break down the visiting defence.

They just didn't show the kind of cohesion Gregor Townsend asked for pre-match. But maybe that's to be expected, given the lack of caps and consistency in this Scotland side.

Portugal have been decent, but have made a lot of mistakes. A well-deserved try though.

  20. converted try

Converted try Scotland 33-7 PORTUGALpublished at 15:57 Greenwich Mean Time

    Luka Begic

The time the ball stays in the maul and it marches towards Scotland line...

Before Begic splinters round the corner and crashes over. Portugal get their reward with the final play of the half.

Samuel Marques to kick... and it's beauty from the touch line!
