The only thing guaranteed about that phase of play was that one team was going to score from something ridiculous.

Turnovers and indiscipline in general - it makes for an exciting game.

    Stafford McDowall

And now Scotland benefit from the loose play!

McDowall picks off a wayward Portuguese offload and somehow pumps his legs to get over the whitewash from the halfway line.

He looked done in there, after a tiring opening 10 minutes, but he was always going to cross the line on his celebratory day.

    Hastings nails the kick.

  3. Postpublished at 10 mins

    Scotland 5-0 Portugal

Scotland have been just a little sloppy in attack, but they've been let off by Portugal's insistence on offloading in the tackle - and Scotland have intercepted at will.

However, it's been loose and Portugal just fly-kicked the ball to the edge of Scotland's 22m, before it was saved by Tom Jordan.

    Harum-scarum.

  4. Postpublished at 8 mins

    Scotland 5-0 Portugal

Scotland lose their first throw - and it's the first Paddy Harrison has lost for the national side in 12 attempts.

Alex Craig then concedes a penalty as he attempts to charge down a box-kick.

Portugal are into the Scottish half.

  5. Murrayfield turns outpublished at 6 mins

    Scotland 5-0 Portugal

It may be Portugal, but we're told 60,000+ are expected in attendance.

A game of this stature would have previously been at Pittodrie or Rugby Park, in front of 10,000 or so.

    Incredible numbers.

  6. try

Try SCOTLAND 5-0 Portugalpublished at 3 mins

    Will Hurd

Scotland enter the Portuguese 22 for the first time and Adam Hastings almost makes it though a gap.

Ben Muncaster is inches short, as is Alex Craig, before tighthead prop Hurd crashes over for his first Scotland try.

It could have been over the line sooner, had Hastings not delivered the ball out sooner. He then slides his kick wide.

  7. Postpublished at 2 mins

    Scotland 0-0 Portugal

Stafford McDowall boots the ball downfield and Portugal get ball in hand. They're going back and back with every phase though, and eventually Scotland force the penalty through good rucking from Ben Muncaster.

Adam Hastings boots it down into the corner.

A few tears from debutants Ben Muncaster and Freddy Douglas during the anthem there.

A broad smile from Darcy Graham. This isn't his first rodeo.

A minute's applause for former Scotland player and head coach Derrick Grant, who sadly passed away earlier this week.

    Now time for the anthems.

Flower of Scotland is always special at Murrayfield, isn't it?

  11. Townsend lauds teenage Douglaspublished at 14:58 Greenwich Mean Time

    Scotland v Portugal (15:10)

Scotland head coach Gregor Townsend tells Sportsound: "It's great the supporters are coming out in such big numbers. The atmosphere is building and it'll be a special day for our players playing at Murrayfield for the first time.

"We feel they deserve an opportunity to play for Scotland.

[On Freddy Douglas] "He'll bring his strengths when he comes off the bench. Those are defensively, clearing contact, but he can also carry hard.

"He'll be brave and fearless in his approach and that's all we ask of him."

Scotland aren't far away. It was a one-score game going into the last seven or eight minutes [against South Africa].

It was a pretty good performance, but looking ahead to this game - it's a good team, a lot to prove for individuals within the team.

The key for Scotland to be successful today is the sum of their parts. It's playing together, holding their structure. They're up against a lot of individual players with Sevens' backgrounds.

  14. Douglas 'picking fights' - Townsendpublished at 14:49 Greenwich Mean Time

    Scotland v Portugal (15:10)

Although he's not in the starting line-up, a lot of pre-match talk has centred around teenage back-row Freddy Douglas.

If the 19-year-old comes off the bench, he'll become Scotland's youngest player since 1963 - despite never playing a pro game.

"He has got the mindset we believe is ready for Test rugby," Townsend said. "His mindset was the one thing that stood out. That he was taking on the opposition no matter the fact they were seasoned Test players.

"That is in our mind when we see Freddie. We saw it when we trained against the Under-20s last year and he was picking fights. He was tackling the big guys in our team."

  15. 'Dream come true' for McDowallpublished at 14:46 Greenwich Mean Time

    Scotland v Portugal (15:10)

The much-changed team also sees Townsend change his captain to Glasgow centre Stafford McDowall, who co-captained his country against Canada in the summer.

"It's something that I didn't think I'd have the chance to do," said the 26-year-old. "It is a dream come true to play for Scotland and start a game at Murrayfield, never mind lead the team out.

"It's hopefully something I'll be able to take in and remember for the rest of my life.

"The closer we get to the game the more it'll probably hit me and I'll get a bit more nervous. It hit me a bit more when I had to do a bit more talking and stuff like that than the last couple of weeks.

"It's something that I might never get a chance to do again, lead a Scotland team out at Murrayfield, so I'll try and embrace and enjoy the moment."

    Scotland v Portugal (15:10)

Don't know much about Portuguese rugby? That's quite alright, we're here to help.

A country more known for their footballing exploits, Portugal sit 15th in the world rankings - one place behind Japan and one behind the USA.

They qualified for the 2023 World Cup and drew with Georgia before beating Fiji by a point - their first ever win in the competition.

Tomas Appleton captains from the centres, with over 70 caps to his name. He's also a dentist.

In the back-row, Nicolas Martins is the key player - a tenacious openside who moved to Montpellier in the summer.

  17. 'Let's give these guys respect'published at 14:39 Greenwich Mean Time

    Scotland v Portugal (15:10)

    Peter Wright
    Former Scotland prop on Sportsound

I like the look of the team. He's given a lot of young guys a chance - Harrison, Samuel, Muncaster in particular.

It's good to see him, he's been knocking on the door with Edinburgh, doing some half-decent things in a poor season for them.

Everybody's screaming to give them opportunities - here's the chance.

They've just got to be careful about their attitude. 'It's only Portugal' is the wrong way to look at it. Let's give these guys respect.

  18. Graham returns with Samuel and Muncaster debutingpublished at 14:35 Greenwich Mean Time

    Scotland v Portugal (15:10)

Bristol-bound Tom Jordan is the only player to remain from the 15-32 loss to the Springboks last week, but there are a few familiar names in the Scotland team.

Darcy Graham makes a return - and two tries would see him become Scotland men's all-time top try-scorer - while Stafford McDowall captains from the centres.

Adam Hastings comes back in at fly-half while George Horne starts a Test at Murrayfield for the first ever time.

Regulars Jamie Bhatti and Luke Crosbie start in the forwards, alonsgide debutants Alex Samuel and Ben Muncaster.
