They created something out of nothing there!

Thomas Young is on for a hat-trick now. He played like a winger there, he has so much pace. That's why he's such a good player out on those wide channels.

    Class from Thomas Young.

The flanker finds himself out on the wing, does an outrageous goosestep, kicks through, exchanges passes with Ellis Bevan before sprinting to the line.

The conversion sails just wide though, so Cardiff still trail.

Bundee Aki pulled it out the back with the decoy pass - that's so hard to defend.

It shows that the Irish teams do the rugby league style passing so well, take it to the line and then it's a late pull-back.

A nice easy finish in the corner.

No they can't. It's another wobble at the lineout and Connacht are back on the attack.

Josh Ioane is such a balanced runner, he glides his way through and the visitors are within 10m.

That's such a key moment into the game only two minutes into the second half.

What a carry by Alun Lawrence, he's been outstanding all year.

Thomas Young also reads the game so well with a nice pickup to get over.

That wasn't really needed for but I think it was just a natural reaction from Conor Oliver.

An under-strength Cardiff side are under the pump here with Connacht dominant.

Ireland centre Bundee Aki is a class act and so much good that Connacht produce goes through him.

Cardiff need to find an answer to quell his influence in the second half.

Cameron WinnettImage source, Huw Evans Picture Agency

Cameron Winnett was understandably disappointed when he wasn't named in Warren Gatland's 34-man Wales squad for the Six Nations.

But Cardiff head coach says the full-back intends to use the time to reflect.

The 22-year-old was one of the notable absentees along with Gloucester pair Gareth Anscombe and Max Llewellyn, Dragons wing Rio Dyer and Scarlets back row Taine Plumtree.

Winnett made his debut against Scotland in the 2024 Six Nations opener in Cardiff and was one of the most impressive Wales performers in the tournament.

"I am disappointed for Cam and he was as well because he wants to play for Wales but he quickly flipped that into a positive and that is his mindset," said Cardiff head coach Matt Sherratt.

"Cam sees it as a chance to maybe take a breath, work on his physical conditioning and some of the little bits and pieces he needs on his technical stuff.

"The nice thing about Cam is he is very level-headed. So how he is on the pitch where he is very consistent and there is no fuss, that is what his personality is like."

  19. Cardiff need to winpublished at 20:56 Greenwich Mean Time 17 January

    HT: Cardiff 7-14 Connacht

If Cardiff lose tonight their chances of reaching the Challenge Cup last 16 will be slim and they will have to wait on other results over the weekend.

South African side Cheetahs and Perpignan will be the teams looking to knock them out of the top four in Pool One.

Fourth-placed Cheetahs and fifth-placed Perpignan are both on six points going into their final games while third-placed Cardiff were on seven.

Cheetahs face Lyon on Saturday while Perpignan travel to Italy to face Zebre on Sunday.

  20. A reminder of qualification aimspublished at 20:52 Greenwich Mean Time 17 January

    HT: Cardiff 7-14 Connacht

Here's a reminder of what both sides need from tonight's match as we look ahead to the Challenge Cup knockouts.

If Cardiff beat Connacht they know they will finish in the top four of Pool 1 and qualify for the last 16 in April.

Connacht are already guaranteed to finish top of the pool - so they have booked a home quarter-final, but a win tonight would also secure a potential home semi-final.

For Cardiff to secure a home quarter-final, they need to finish second or be one of the best two three-placed finishers from the overall three pools.
