Derby rights are heading east tonight as Cardiff maintained their winning start to the new United Rugby Championship season.

Scarlets flew out of the blocks with early tries from Macs Page and Taine Plumtree, before the visitors hit back with two of their own from Liam Belcher and Mason Grady in a breathless first half.

Scarlets' discipline then came under the spotlight after the break and at one point were down to 13 as Harri Millard took full advantage.

Ben Thomas' solo effort wrapped up the bonus point, while Sam Costelow will be left to rue two missed penalties.

Scarlets remain in search of their first win this campaign, but head coach Dwayne Peel can be encouraged by the improvement from last season.

Cardiff are back in action on Friday when they host Glasgow, while Scarlets welcome Connacht.

    Until then, goodnight.

Cardiff flanker and player of the match Dan Thomas on Premier Sports: "It's good to come back here and get the win, it's a long time since I've been here.

"We didn't start off the best but so long as we finish well, with the character we showed at the end, then I'm happy.

"The game is won between the eights [packs] and it's credit to our forwards how much work we've done in pre-season. Kicked to the corner, scored a try, went for the scrum and scored a try."

Cardiff captain Liam Belcher told Premier Sports: It's a funny one with the start because our head coach Matt Sherratt came up with that kick-off move so we'll blame that one on him.

It's big resilience, we had that last year - sticking in games - but credit to the half-backs marching us around the pitch for 60 minutes.

I thought the defence before half-time was really important keeping them out and I think that tired out the Scarlets, and the forwards did well in the end to get the two yellow cards.

Last year we kept going for points when we had teams under the cosh and it came off tonight, so we'll take that.

Scarlets started like a house on fire, two early tries and 15 points up in no time.

Cardiff to be fair to them found their way into the game, two chances for three points and went for the corner and scored through Liam Belcher.

Tactically I thought Aled Davies and Callum Sheedy were excellent.

And that's it, Cardiff recover from a poor start to make it two wins from two in the new United Rugby Championship season.

You can see the frustration on Sam Costelow's face there after missing the penalty, you have to feel that's the game.

Sam Costelow misses another relatively easy penalty and it looks like Scarlets will leave this match empty-handed.

Frustratingly from the Scarlets' point of view we've seen at least three of them this second half with unforced errors.

Jarrod Taylor, who was so good last week with the latest. You can just feel the energy draining from Scarlets' supporters.

It's another unforced error from Scarlets, this time Gareth Davies juggling the pass and knocking on.

It's not the result he'll want on his 250th appearance.

They have eight minutes to at least try and salvage a losing bonus-point.

That middle third of the pitch has not been working for Scarlets.

They look a bit lost, while Cardiff's defence has definitely stepped up.

    Can they make it count?

Dan Thomas is making a right nuisance of the Scarlets breakdown.

Gareth Davies looking to kick but Thomas put so much pressure on the Scarlets scrum-half and that forced the knock-on.

Cardiff are slowly turning the screw now.

Scarlets have 15 minutes now to turn this match around.

A change of tactic by Sam Costelow who puts the ball high into the Llanelli sky, but Cam Winnett takes it comfortably.

That's really good pressure from Cardiff. Initially hitting the big ball-carriers of the Scarlets, forcing them to kick. Then it's a really clever kick downfield from Ben Thomas.

Ioan Lloyd was unable to gather the ball and Ben Thomas gathers it, a little fend and Cardiff have gone 60 metres and that's silenced the crowd here.

Sam Costelow doesn't fancy the long-distance penalty attempt and kicks for touch.

They win lineout ball, but Cardiff's line speed is pushing them back.

I think that's the right call from the referee. As we all know when you slow it down it looks worse, he did try to wrap the arms but it was just too high.

Rightly so, yellow card and penalty.

It was very similar to Ryan Elias'.
