Northampton and Clermont have set a very high bar with the Saints' England stars to the fore in a pulsating last-16 encounter.

Northampton's guile, skill and attacking craft kept Clermont at arm's length in the second half.

Some superb performances - obviously Freeman, but Odendall is back, Fin Smith was influential, Coles and Augustus in the pack stood out and Pollock showed flashes of what he can do.

Shout-out to Tom Lockett too for a cracker of a hit on Fritz Lee when he came off the bench.

You can see the next iteration of Courtney Lawes and Lewis Ludlam coming through and experiences like this against one of France's giants will serve them well.

All smiles for the Saints, who get a bit of extra time to rest up with the advantage of going first in the last 16 games.

It's all over, a thrilling win for Saints and they will be at home in the last eight next week against either Castres or Benetton.

And then Jules Bousquet shows some fancy footwork down the opposite flank to get into the Saints 22 - credit to Clermont for giving it a go throughout.

Lovely hands from Fin Smith as Saints go right in the 22, but a Clermont hand knocks it forward.

That long delay has understandably deflated this game a bit, it feels like Clermont's chance of a comeback has gone.

There's been a lengthy delay here as Fritz Lee receives the necessary attention.

Both sets of players move a ball through the hands to keep warm before the number eight is stretchered off to a warm ovation.

Fritz Lee is carried off on a a stretcher to a standing ovation - it's a sad end to his Clermont career in Europe, let's hope he recovers well.

This is a long delay, denoting what a serious injury Lee has suffered. The players are trying to keep warm while he is seen to by the medics.

Oh dear - Fritz Lee looks to be seriously injured.

There was a horrible noise as he went to the floor, and a stretcher is on very quickly. This could be a serious leg injury, and this could be the final act for the veteran in a Clermont shirt.

Henry Pollock sinks to the ground while play continues around him, possibly from a stray hand to the face from a team-mate.

He's back on his feet but looked a touch groggy there.

Yes indeed, the Lions selection, still some weeks away, is going to be a humdinger with some players mounting big challenges for a place late in the season like Thomas Freeman, esq.

Saints started the second half as they end the first as Juarno Augustus doubled his tally after George Hendy's fine solo break.

It looked as if that might be that but Clermont have salvaged some pride with their last two tries and now only trail by 10 with over 20 minutes still to play.

I wouldn't say the home fans are panicking just yet but they might just be shuffling around on their seats a bit more.
