One of the reasons Henry Pollock is being lauded so early on his career is because he is an instinctive player.

He made an excellent tackle before winning the decision at the breakdown and then spotting the opportunity to tap and go, against a retreating Clermont defence.

Saints and England fans alike will be hoping he is allowed the same license to play what he sees throughout his career.

    Listen to the crowd!

There was a catastrophic mistake from Northampton but a remarkable cover tackle from Hendy, I think it was, and then Saints go 100m from one line to the other line and Freeman scores in the diagonal corner.

    Astonishing rugby.

    Tommy Freeman

The in-form England winger is put in for a lovely score near the corner, but it all started when Alex Mitchell's tap-tackle thwarted Bautista Delguy when he looked set to score at the other end.

The momentum has swung in the home side's favour!

You can see in that passage of play that Northampton are nowhere near to playing their best attacking rugby, but they kept the momentum going and a lovely probing run from Alex Mitchell set up Fin Smith on the angle.

    Great riposte from Northampton.

The England half-back pairing combining beautifully for Saints' first try.

After their slow start, Northampton have got their tails up and are moving the ball with a real urgency.

Now it's Clermont's turn to stem the tide.

Alex Mitchell feeds Fin Smith on the short side, and the fly-half crashes over near the flag.

And to cap it off, he lands a tricky conversion with aplomb!

    Northampton 3-10 Clermont

    Paul Grayson
Former Northampton and England fly-half on BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra

Northampton have to up the pace of the game. Clermont have come here to play hard, direct, physical rugby up the middle.

Defending is so much more physically draining than attacking and if Northampton don't have the ball they will run out of juice later in the game.

Saints could do with camping out in the Clermont half now, Henry Pollock took a quick penalty that came to nothing and it was all a bit frantic.

Then they get a free kick from a scrum and begin to edge into the French half. This is better.

    Northampton 0-10 Clermont

    Paul Grayson
Former Northampton and England fly-half on BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra

Northampton were manfully throwing their bodies in the way with a couple of huge hits but it was one heavy carry after another.

There's virtually no-one out wide apart from on the right wing. It's route one and then some and eventually Northampton ran out of power.

It's a pummelling for Northampton these first 12 minutes.

I said Saints would want to start quickly but it's been the visitors, in their bright yellow jerseys, who have flown out the blocks.

The hosts look a bit shell-shocked early on. How will they respond?

Bautista Delguy tries a hitch-kick on the run down the right as Clermont keep their foot on the throat of the hosts.

The defence is impressive, but Northampton cannot get out of their own 22.
