I mentioned earlier that Ben Thomas and Max Llewellyn is the fifth centre combination Warren Gatland has used this year.

    The previous four pairings were:

    • Nick Tompkins & Owen Watkins (v Scotland)
    • Nick Tompkins & George North (v England, Ireland & Italy)
    • Owen Watkins & Joe Roberts (v France)
    • Mason Grady & Owen Watkins (v South Africa & Australia)

Thumbs up if you got it right.

Wales flanker Taine Plumtree believes his housemate Blair Murray will be one to watch as he wins his first cap against Fiji on Sunday.

The Scarlets pair have both joined the Wales set-up having played in New Zealand.

Warren Gatland suddenly has an abundance of midfield options but must look to settle on a midfield pairing for the Six Nations.

This weekend he has picked the fifth different combination of 2024 as he looks to find successors to established World Cup duo Nick Tompkins and George North.

Ben Thomas and Max Llewellyn get the nod against Fiji but Eddie James and Owen Watkin will also get a chance this month, while Tompkins is also in the squad if needed.

Quiz question: Can you name the previous four centre pairings used by Wales this year?

    Answer coming before kick-off.

  4. The next Jamie Roberts?published at 13:24 Greenwich Mean Time 10 November

Welsh rugby may be endlessly looking for natural successors to heroes of the past but has an obvious heir in Max Llewellyn.

The Gloucester centre, the son of former Wales captain Gareth, is unabashed in his admiration of former Wales star Jamie Roberts.

He plays centre - and prefers to wear 12 - launched his career at the same club, Cardiff, and even attended the same high school in the city as the British and Irish Lion.

And at 6ft 3in (1.96m) and 16st 4lb (104kg), it is clear that Llewellyn can also walk the walk, wherever that may take him.

Little wonder then that Roberts has already tipped the 25-year-old to make a big impression at international level this season.

"Growing up, Jamie was always a role model given we play the same position and went to the same school," Llewellyn said.

"I look at the career he had, the places he went and the clubs he played for and I think that would be pretty exciting to do the same."

It's an exciting backline, you look at Cameron Winnett, Mason Grady and Max Llewellyn who has been excellent for Gloucester.

Tomos Williams has probably been the player of the season just over the bridge in the English Premiership.

  6. Anscombe comes fighting backpublished at 13:21 Greenwich Mean Time 10 November

    Wales v Fiji (13:40 GMT)

Gareth AnscombeImage source, Huw Evans Picture Agency

Fly-half Gareth Anscombe says returning to international rugby was a "massive driver" as he was not ready to bid farewell to the Wales jersey.

Anscombe, 33, last played Test rugby when he guided Wales to an historic 40-6 World Cup win against Australia in September 2023.

He was injured in the warm-up for the following game against Georgia and missed the rest of the season.

Anscombe has since joined Gloucester and impressed to gain an immediate return to the number 10 job.

"I always had in the back of my mind that I could come back for Wales," said Anscombe.

It was the latest in a list of injuries that sidelined him for two years between 2019 and 2021, including a major knee problem.

"You can give up and move on and retire, or fight to get back, and I've always chosen the latter," he said.

"When you've been out for as long as I have and had so many setbacks, you figure out what drives you.

"So even during those times I've been out, I've always felt like I could, if I got myself back to fitness, add something at this level."

We need some joy in Welsh rugby today.

They need to get that camel off their back after a tough 12 months since the Rugby World Cup, and what better way to start than against an exciting Fijian side who will be suffering after a heavy defeat to Scotland.

    Wales v Fiji (13:40 GMT)

Ryan EliasImage source, Huw Evans Picture Agency

Wales hooker Ryan Elias says he has been revitalised by the decision to be rested for the international summer tour.

Elias, 29, missed Wales' summer Tests against South Africa and Australia after agreeing a break with head coach Warren Gatland.

The Scarlets hooker spent the summer with his young family and had a proper pre-season with his region.

Elias has now returned to the Wales squad and is among the replacements - or "finishers" as they're now known - today against Fiji.

"I got to the end of last season and felt physically and mentally at the edge, not burnt out but getting there," said Elias.

"I had a conversation with Gats [Warren Gatland] and I feel a lot better after having a summer off.

"Warren always talks about family and he is true to his word, he was fully supportive of my decision.

"He was good to me, I had that time off and feel a lot better for it."

  9. Lake set for 'incredible' Wales momentpublished at 13:11 Greenwich Mean Time 10 November

Dewi Lake is looking forward to an "incredible" experience of captaining Wales on home turf as the hooker prepares to lead Wales out in Cardiff for the first time against Fiji today.

  10. The rivalrypublished at 13:08 Greenwich Mean Time 10 November

    Wales v Fiji (13:40 GMT)

This is the 15th meeting between these nations and Wales have won 12 of the previous 14 games.

But if we have anything like the last game we're in for a nail-biter.

That was in Bordeaux at last year's World Cup - the fifth tournament in a row that Wales and Fiji have met in the pool stage.

Fiji's solitary victory came at the 2007 World Cup which duly marked the end of Gareth Jenkins' tenure as Wales head coach.

But Fiji also claimed a draw the next time they faced Wales - then under Warren Gatland.

Since then, Wales have dominated this fixture, but only just:

    • 2011: Wales 66-0 Fiji* (Hamilton, NZ)
    • 2014: Wales 17-14 Fiji
    • 2015: Wales 23-13 Fiji*
    • 2019: Wales 29-17 Fiji* (Oita, Japan)
    • 2021: Wales 38-23 Fiji
    • 2023: Wales 32-26 Fiji* (Bordeaux, France)

  11. Wales fans... happy with the team?published at 13:06 Greenwich Mean Time 10 November

    Wales v Fiji (13:40 GMT)

Warren Gatland says he is "excited" by the make-up of his squad with some much-needed experience coming back to offer a guiding hand to the kids.

But are you Wales fans happy with the line-up?

    Get on the thumbs...

  12. Wales will take 'ugly win' against Fijipublished at 13:05 Greenwich Mean Time 10 November

    Wales v Fiji (13:40 GMT)

Assistant coach Jonathan Humphreys says Wales would take any sort of win against Fiji in Cardiff today.

Wales have not won a Test match since the 2023 World Cup pool triumph against Georgia more than a year ago and are just one loss away from equalling the nation's worst losing sequence of 10, under Steve Hansen between 2002 and 2003.

  13. Fiji change six from Scotland losspublished at 13:03 Greenwich Mean Time 10 November

Fiji look set to be a far stronger prospect today than at Edinburgh last week.

Head coach Mick Byrne will be clamping down on discipline this week after his side were shown two yellow cards inside the opening 14 minutes at Murrayfield.

He has also made six personnel changes from the team that lost 57-17, with star backs Jiuta Wainiqolo, Waisea Nayacalevu, Josua Tuisova and Semi Radradra returning to the starting side.

It was Radrada who dropped the ball with the try line at his mercy in the final play of that epic previous encounter with Wales at last year's World Cup in Bordeaux.

Fiji: Karawalevu; Wainiqolo, Nayacalevu (capt), Tuisova, Radradra; Muntz, Lomani; Mawi, Ikanivere, Tawake, Nasilasila, Mayanavanua, Derenalagi, Salawa, Canakaivata.

Replacements: Matavesi, Hetet, Koroiduadua, Vocevoce, Tuisue, Kuruvoli, Ravula, Magala.

  14. Murray handed Wales debutpublished at 13:02 Greenwich Mean Time 10 November

    Wales v Fiji (13:40 GMT)

Blair Murray makes his Wales debut after just six matches for regional team Scarlets.

Murray, 23, is a former New Zealand Schoolboy international but qualifies for Wales through his mother, who hails from Tonyrefail.

Centre Max Llewellyn will gain his third cap and make his second start, while his Gloucester team-mates Tomos Williams and Gareth Anscombe return as Wales' half-backs.

Anscombe has been given the fly-half role which allows centre Ben Thomas to partner Llewellyn in the Welsh midfield.

Locks Will Rowlands and Adam Beard are also back after missing the summer tour but flanker Jac Morgan is only named on a replacements bench that includes six forwards.

In all there are seven new faces and three positional changes from the last Test, against Australia in July.

Wales: Winnett; Grady, Llewellyn, B Thomas, Murray; Anscombe, T Williams; G Thomas, Lake (capt), Griffin, Rowlands, Beard, Plumtree, Reffell, Wainwright.

Replacements: Elias, N Smith, Assiratti, Tshiunza, Botham, J Morgan, Bevan, Costelow.

Good afternoon and welcome on this Remembrance Sunday for the opening match of Wales' autumn Test series.

Let's face it, there is only one thing on Welsh fans' minds and that's ending this terrible losing streak.

And listening to the players this week, they don't care how they do it.

Wales have lost their last nine Tests and are aiming to avoid matching their worst ever run, set back in 2003.

Fiji, meanwhile, also have a point to prove a week after their record defeat by Scotland and their heaviest loss in Europe since 2016.

So first things first, let's take a look at the teams.
