Summary

  1. Goodbye from Northampton!published at 14:07 British Summer Time

    FT: Ireland 43-27 Spain

That was truly a fantastic exhibition of rugby from both teams and was compelling right to the end. Spain played their part massively in that game and came away with a bonuis point with their five tries. They will be hoping to get a victory against Japan next week.

For Ireland, though, it is job done as back-to-back bonus point wins secure their place in the knockout stages ahead of next week's mouth-watering clash with New Zealand in Brighton.

That game is a 14:45 kick off and we will be here again with live text commentary and reaction. We hope you can join us then but, for now, thank you for joining us today and enjoy the rest of your Sunday!

Ireland prop and Player of the Match Ellena Perry seaking to BBC Two: "We knew Spain would come out firing and they pushed us right to the end."

"We needed front foot ball and that was difficult, but we did that and are delighted with the win."

"We can't fault two bonus-point wins but we will still have plenty of work to do in training this week."

In terms of the goals this squad had, that is two wins, so tick, tick. In this pool there were no gimmies, Ireland wanted a big physical battle like this. They have things to work on, but some great individual performances.

    Ireland 43-27 Spain

This has been a truly compelling game of rugby showcasing everything good about the game.

Ultimately though it is job done for Scott Bemand's side who beat their World Cup points record set last week by a point and progress through to the knockout stages.

They now go to Brighton next week to take on New Zealand who take on Japan kicking off right about now. There will still be plenty of 'work-ons' in training this week but Northampton has been a happy hunting ground for Ireland these past two weeks.

    Cristina Blanco

With the final play of the match, Spain score a wonderful try from a trick play off a lineout. Blanco throws short to scrum half Vergara who gives it back to allow the hooker in the corner.

    Ireland 43-22 Spain

A shame for Spain as scrum half Bingbing Vergara knocks on at the ruck. That does not take away from the fact that Spain have stayed in this game right to the end and have contributed massively to a thoroughly entertaining game.

Prop Ellena Perry is named Player of the Match for an excellent display in what has been - despite a raft of tries - a very attritional game.

    Ireland 43-22 Sain

Superb Irish defence on their own line! The game may be all but in the bag but they were not about to let Spain get a fifth try there.

Eventually, Spain knock on as they try to pick off the back of another ruck. That will please Scott Bemand almost as much as their seven tries.

  12. Postpublished at 13:41 British Summer Time

    Ireland 43-22 Spain

Is that the score that books Ireland's place in the quarter-finals?

Remember, a bonus-point victory takes Scott Bemand's side into the last eight with a game to spare.

Not that next week's clash against New Zealand, likely to decide who tops the pool, will be anything like a dead rubber of course!

    Anna McGann (con Breen)

Ireland outlast the Spanish defence and Anna McGann shows some brilliant footwork in a tight space to go over in the corner for her second try.

Replacement Enya Breen adds the extras. Do Spain have anything in response with just under ten minutes left? They have had nearly every time so far today!

    Lourdes Alameda

After conversation with TMO Matteo Liperini, Kat Roche adjudges that captain Lourdes Alameda used her momentum to place the ball on the try line.

The conversion is missed again but, if nothing else, Spain have a bonus point with their fourth try. This has been a cracking game in Northampton!

Ireland hold up Spain on the line as the Spanish pack make an illegal double movement according to Kat Roche.

However, our American official is checking that decision with the TMO.

    Grace Moore (con O'Brien)

Stop me if you have heard this before... Ireland allow the pack to go through the phases before crashing over near the posts.

This time it is Grace Moore who goes over for her second try and, with Dannah O'Brien's conversion, Scott Bemand's side open up their biggest lead of the day as we approach the hour mark.

Dannah O'Brien and Amalia Argudo have been having a one-on-one kicking battle and the Irish out half wins it as Zahia Perez spills a high ball.

Ireland go on on the attack and, after some incredibly physical phases, a Spanish offside allows Ireland to go into the corner.

They can smell the try line for a sixth try...

    Grace Moore

Zahia Perez doesn't get enough on her clearance kick and gives Ireland a line-out in the Spanish 22. Claire Boles takes the ball off the top and her back row partner Grace Moore hits a devastating line off the short pass to power over.

Dannah O'Brien strikes the upright again with her conversion but Ireland almost immediately cancel out the Spain try.
