We've seen this film before, haven't we? Just a week ago in fact.

    James Hook
Former Wales fly-half on BBC Radio Wales

Wales try to move the ball and it's a loose pass. Dan Edwards is unable to take the ball.

    It's unfortunate for Wales.

In these conditions the ball is slippery and it forces mistakes.

It started so well with Wales' maul, they made nearly 20 metres with it, they just needed to keep the ball.

    Dylan Riley

That is a shocker from Wales.

Just as they were enjoying some rare second-half possession, Kieran Hardy throws a pass to Dan Edwards, which is high but catchable, but the fly-half fumbles the ball.

Japan centre Dylan Riley gladly gathers the loose ball and has an easy run-in for a converted try which brings his team within two points of Wales.

There wasn't really enough proof to prove Deans crossed the line there, but because of the on-field decision they've given it.

If we go back though, Wales had to keep pushing when they had the ball, really put Japan under pressure and control the game again.

Now for a drinks break and a familiar sense of dread for Wales as Japan chip away at their lead.

Wales conceded three penalties, and all three are ones we shouldn't have given away.

Two offsides, and one for foul play, we just shouldn't be giving those away.

  10. 'Ridiculous decision'published at 08:22 British Summer Time

    Japan 15-24 Wales

    James Hook
Former Wales fly-half on BBC Radio Wales

That's ridiculous. It's clearly short and there's clearly hands under the ball.

He said there's no evidence but the evidence is clear - we have just seen it.

Try - Japan 15-24 Walespublished at 59 mins

    Warner Deans

    The try is given!

As I said, what was crucial there was referee Luke Pearce's wording: the on-field decision was a try.

There was no conclusive evidence to overturn that decision, and second row Warner Deans has reduced Japan's deficit to nine points.

    The conversion goes wide.

    That's definitely short.

Japan are banging on the door here. Referee Luke Pearce stops play to check if Japan lock Warner Deans has managed to score a try.

Crucially, the on-field decision is a try.

Is Deans short? TMO Glenn Newman is taking a close look.

    Japan 10-24 Wales

    James Hook
Former Wales fly-half on BBC Radio Wales

I think that's the ninth handling error from Japan.

They are putting themselves in good positions in the second half but they can't keep hold of the ball.

    Japan 10-24 Wales

Another Japanese handling error allows Dan Edwards to boot the ball into the opposition 22.

The subsequent clearance means the upshot is that Wales have a lineout just inside Japan's half, a decent result for Matt Sherratt's men.

Wales' first sequence of attacking phases is abruptly halted, though, as Kieran Hardy's kick is charged down.

Japan are back in Wales' 22 and the panic sets in for the visitors once again.

Aaron Wainwright picks up from the base of the scrum and carries superbly to give Wales a solid platform to clear.

Blair Murray does the rest, though it's not the biggest kick. Japan have a lineout some 10 metres out from the Welsh 22.

  18. 'Big test for Wales'published at 08:14 British Summer Time

    Japan 10-24 Wales

    James Hook
Former Wales fly-half on BBC Radio Wales

Last week we tried to shut up shop and protect the lead and it didn't work.

You need that balance. You need to give the Japanese defence something to think about.

It's a big test for the decision-makers of Wales, Dan Edwards in his first start at 10.

Wales' maul defence is good and so is their tackling from the next phase, forcing another Japanese knock-on.

They'll have a scrum close to their own line, a chance to clear.
