Join us next Sunday for England's final game this autumn against Eddie Jones' Japan.

Funny enough, England's losing streak is now their worst since five successive defeats under Jones in 2018.

    FT: England 20-29 South Africa

    BBC Radio 5 Live

England head coach Steve Borthwick, speaking on BBC 5 Live: "We have a lot of young players that have come into this team and we have accelerated their transition.

"As you look towards the future these players are going to be brilliant international players but right now these days of development are tough.

"We will persevere and be better because of these experiences."

On England coming close again: "I will have a good discussion with the players as to why, in the second half, we didn't shift the ball, when they were a player down.

"We will make sure the players have the confidence to shift that ball."

New Zealand, Australia and now South Africa. What on earth do England do during the week? Mindless. Borthwick is not the person to sort it out.

  4. 'These days are painful'published at 20:19 Greenwich Mean Time 16 November 2024

    FT: England 20-29 South Africa

    BBC Radio 5 Live

England head coach Steve Borthwick, speaking on BBC 5 Live: "I am incredibly disappointed and frustrated. You see so much good, the way the team came out of the blocks at the start and came at South Africa.

"Then for a long time, the game was toe-to-toe, but in the last period we failed to take our opportunities. How many times did we fail to take our chances in their 22?

"These are painful days, at times we are putting ourselves in positions to win games and we are not converting them. Whilst these are painful, we will use them in a positive way to help with our development."

England have to finish positively. They were not clinical in the second half.

  6. 'I am very optimistic about players in this team'published at 20:13 Greenwich Mean Time 16 November 2024

    FT: England 20-29 South Africa

England captain Jamie George, speaking to TNT Sports: "I couldn't be more confident [that this team will get it right]. The character of the players and staff, I think we have the right people and the right characters.

"I am very optimistic about players in this team. You have Freddie Steward and Sam Underhill, who have come on today having not played that much rugby and put on a performance like today, that gives me confidence."

Not quite the ending we were expecting just before half time as both teams sprinted in after fabulous running rugby at either end of the pitch.

England can challenge at this level but they are learning very quickly that the little mistakes are magnified at this level.

Whether it is just the accuracy of some of the passing or the decisions they made in possession, they are just the nuances where South Africa punished England.

There is no question South Africa were the better side.

Handre Pollard is used to big moments. Only last year did he knock England out of the World Cup with a penalty from near halfway.

Another long-range strike - this time on 59 minutes - put the Boks ahead.

He is made for big kicks.

  9. 'We are looking at very different games in the last three'published at 20:04 Greenwich Mean Time 16 November 2024

    FT: England 20-29 South Africa

England captain Jamie George on being replaced after 50 minutes: "I felt alright out there but if it is best for the team for Luke [Cowan-Dickie] to come on, and I thought he was brilliant when he came on, it is an 80-minute performance in the two jerseys and we have great leadership on the field.

"We are looking at very different games in the last three and probably three different reasons as to why we lost. What I do know is we are working incredibly hard. We are learning and we need to be able to put that on the field."

  10. 'It is called Test match rugby for a reason'published at 20:01 Greenwich Mean Time 16 November 2024

    FT: England 20-29 South Africa

    BBC Radio 5 Live

Speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live, England captain Jamie George said: "We are here to win, we are as frustrated as everyone else with the lack of results.

"There were parts of that game we did really well. I'm really proud of the team because a lot of questions were asked and we fronted up.

Test rugby is about fine margins and applying pressure on pressure and we couldn't do that against a very good team. Our discipline let us down. The scrum was under some pressure in the first half but got better. We got turned over too many times but the way we attacked was pleasing.

"We are very close to breaking a team like that down. Leading into that last 30 minutes, if we don't have the croc roll, it is a different game. It is called Test match rugby for a reason and we have to make sure we pick ourselves up and get ready for Japan."

The old phrase is 'body on fire, head in the fridge'. Cool, calm and collected.

England made it a bit too easy for South Africa. They coughed the ball up and gave penalties away.

  13. 'Our discipline cost us'published at 19:52 Greenwich Mean Time 16 November 2024

    FT: England 20-29 South Africa

    BBC Radio 5 Live

Speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live, England full-back Freddie Steward said: "Frustration. We had a lot of opportunities to get points on the board and come back into that game.

"We were close again but we didn't get over the line and we have to get the results. You cannot fault the effort but we didn't have enough today and credit to South Africa, they shut the game out well.

"Our discipline cost us. We talked about keeping our penalty count down in the week. We gave too many away and it cost us.

"South Africa bring physicality everywhere on the pitch and particularly at the breakdown. We were a bit lethargic there at times and it cost us.

"We showed to ourselves and hopefully the fans that we are not far away, it was a solid performance but we just didn't have enough to get back in the game. Their tries came from our errors but we will regroup and come back stronger."

Close but no banana. Again. England lack a bit of nouse at critical times. They also don't have enough depth when there are key players missing or are substituted.

South Africa got the job done. Some of their players have come into this having come from a hard Rugby Championship. They will be hopeful for some rest over the coming weeks. England are well within touching distance of these teams, but for me today it's just the exit, we just couldn't get clear of our areas.

England have done well to keep this game respectable, but I am not seeing any progression. The players are there or thereabouts but the coach looks completely out of his depth. Losing seems to be the new winning as far as the RFU are concerned.

So predictable. Borthwick just doesn't have the same qualities as other top coaches.
