  5. 'Pride is the only word for it' - young British Nigerian player on Itojepublished at 15:57 British Summer Time

    Peter Gillibrand
    BBC Newsbeat

Ifiok Awak-Essien, a rugby player and content creator, is no stranger to a tour - from watching the Lions to playing with his team abroad. "What goes on tour stays on tour," he tells BBC Newsbeat with a laugh.

Although he jokes about dashing down the wing faster than downing a pint, he says tours are essential especially when he questions whether he's the "only black person" in the team.

"There's more of us than we think. It's so easy to think you're super isolated."

Ifiok went to school, found rugby and often watched Maro Itoje play for Saracens, then England: "Having people you can look up to is so great and being able to see more and more of that both at an elite level and at a grassroots level is important to us."

When we ask him what he makes of Itoje as the first black Lions captain, he replies with one word: "Pride."

He later adds: "Being able to constantly see people like yourself that are playing well and getting the recognition - it motivates you to keep playing and you're like 'I can be something like this if I want to' - the possibility is there.

"I think of pride because I know how much it probably means to him and his family. I know how much it means to my family, even though my parents aren't the biggest fan of rugby, the whole contact side. My mum can't handle it."

No wild celebrations, just a few cheers and gentle applause.

  9. Postpublished at 15:49 British Summer Time

Surely Andy gave Owen a call before the announcement? I know you are not meant to.

Not saying he should have gone. Not saying he shouldn't. But not picking Owen Farrell is going to make for some awkward family dinners.

Jac Morgan is always the standout player in every game, he's carrying a lot of weight on those young shoulders.

He thoroughly deserves it, no player in Wales deserves it more than him, especially being captain through this tough period, he's just held himself so well, it's phenomenal.

  12. Cuthbert 'delighted' for Williams and Morganpublished at 15:43 British Summer Time

    Alex Cuthbert
2013 British and Irish Lion on Scrum V The Warm-Up

I'm delighted for Tomos [Williams] and Jac [Morgan]. I think their performances probably deserve their call-up. I'm gutted there's not a couple more Welsh influences in the squad, but Andy Farrell has obviously decided to go for familiarity and people he can rely on.

I'm extremely excited for the two Welsh lads that got selected and hopefully they'll get the job done.

  13. Deflation for Darcy fanspublished at 15:40 British Summer Time

    Tom English
    BBC Scotland's chief sports writer

Waiting on Pierre Schoeman and Duhan van der Merwe at Murrayfield.

A sense of disappointment here for Darcy Graham, the little, big man of Edinburgh. He's the most notable Scot to miss out and it's a touch brutal. He's in magnificent form, offers raw pace and lots of X-factor but he’s not made it.

I wouldn't say it's flat here, but everybody thinks the world of Graham and they’re clearly feeling for him while euphoric for their two boys who made it.

    Elite sport, eh?

Sorry Ford missed out, I'd much prefer him to Marcus Smith as a 10 but recognise Smith's greater versatility. Maybe consolation prize of captain against the Pumas? Wouldn't be surprised if Ben Curry gets a call part way through.

    Jonathan, Derbyshire

Marcus Smith picked on reputation rather than form. If Finn Russell goes down before the first Test, the lack of experience at 10 would be pretty worrying.

  15. Kinghorn only France-based playerpublished at 15:36 British Summer Time

    • Toulouse's Blair Kinghorn, the versatile Scotland back, is the only France-based player to be picked.
    • Second row Scott Cummings is one of eight Scotland players to be included.
    • Two-time tourist Jamie George and Wales co-captain Dewi Lake miss out at hooker with Dan Sheehan, Luke Cowan-Dickie and Ronan Kelleher preferred.
    • England's George Ford, Scotland's Ben White, Tom Jordan and Darcy Graham, and Ireland centre Robbie Henshaw also fail to make the squad.
    • Leinster have 12 players in the squad, the most of any club side. Ireland are best represented with 15 players, England will supply 13.

  16. Gloucester celebrate Williams' call-uppublished at 15:34 British Summer Time

As it stands, there will only be two Wales players on board the flight to Australia next month - Jac Morgan and Tomos Williams.

We heard from Williams earlier, who said he "shed a tear" when he found out he had been selected

The 30-year-old scrum-half was based at home when he got the news of his call-up, but that didn't stop his Gloucester team-mates celebrating, external.

Jim: Can’t understand why Jack Willis did not make the squad as he had Curry for breakfast when they played each other. Maybe Toulouse were not prepared to release him. We shall never know!

Andrew: George Ford and Sam Underhill the most deserving absentees for me.

  18. 'Prendergast the biggest Irish casualty'published at 15:30 British Summer Time

    Matt Gault
    BBC Sport NI Senior Journalist

Andy Farrell's travelling party was always going to have a healthy Irish flavour to it and 15 is indeed a strong number.

The inclusion of some of those was never really in doubt: Tadhg Beirne (the first name read out), Dan Sheehan, Jamison Gibson-Park and Andrew Porter to name a few.

But Josh van der Flier and Garry Ringrose in particular will feel relieved. The Leinster duo missed out in 2021 and were perceived to be on the bubble, with last weekend's defeat by Northampton not helping matters.

Given Caelan Doris' injury, the biggest casualty from an Irish perspective is Sam Prendergast. Handed the Ireland 10 shirt by Farrell in November, he simply has not done enough in recent months to earn a seat on the plane to Australia.

He is only 22 though and has time to chase his Lions dream. However, for 15 of his Ireland team-mates (12 of which are also his Leinster club-mates), the excitement can really start.

  20. Genge called up for first Lions tourpublished at 15:26 British Summer Time

Bristol Bears prop Ellis Genge has never toured with the British and Irish Lions before.

Similar to Henry Pollock, he found out about his call-up alongside his team-mates at Bristol's training ground.

Genge, 30, was nearly taken off his chair, external as his team-mates celebrated by giving him a friendly push!
