  2. 'It is a privilege to coach England'published at 18:43 Greenwich Mean Time 24 November 2024

More of Steve Borthwick to TNT Sports: "This coaching team and I feel very positive about going forward, we made some changes and I feel we have done well in a short space of time. We are disappointed with some of the results but we are moving in the right direction. The average age (of the team) is 25, we have come close on a number of occasions, and I sense the players are wanting to convert that.

"I thoroughly enjoy it (coaching the team), it is a privilege to coach the England team.

"Year two has been building a new team, with a new profile of player, and a new way of playing. We always want more and we will push on in the new year."

  3. 'Some of the tries were exceptional'published at 18:42 Greenwich Mean Time 24 November 2024

    FT: England 59-14 Japan

Steve Borthwick speaking to TNT: "It is important to acknowledge how brilliant the supporters have been. The players wanted to deliver and they did so in a positive manner. Some of the tries were exceptional and you can see the identity growing.

"We need to move forward really quickly, the overriding emotion is frustration after the autumn but we have to reflect on some of the attacking play as some of the tries today were outstanding."

  6. 'The Australia game is the one we are most disappointed with'published at 18:26 Greenwich Mean Time 24 November 2024

    FT: England 58-14 Japan

Jamie George on TNT Sports: "I was really pleased how we went about it, we were clear about our identity. We speak about getting our house in order and I thought we did that today.

"We were trying to find advantages, we wanted to bombard them and with these new laws we were going to get a lot of ball back off unstructured ball, and I am pleased how we finished them off.

"When you are playing a team coached by Eddie Jones you cannot expect anything, you know you will get things that are a bit wild and wacky.

"You have to take each game in isolation, there is a lot of talk about the last 20 minutes but the positive side is we put world class teams under a lot of pressure. When we reflect, the Australia game is the one we were most disappointed with.

"But at the same time there is a lot to be positive about."

Matt, Stockport: We needed that win. Technically the weakest opposition of the series, but a lacklustre display and scoring a couple of tries would have left even more questions. We do need to decide on the defensive system we want to use though, because this one isn't really working.

  9. 'We have to win those small moments in the big games'published at 18:15 Greenwich Mean Time 24 November 2024

    FT: England 58-14 Japan

Marcus Smith speaking to TNT Sports: "There are a lot of learnings to take, but it is always good to finish with a win.

"The autumn did not go the way we wanted but we have taken a lot of learnings in closing games out. Hopefully in the Six Nations we get to carry it on.

"It takes time, there will be pain for a bit, we have stuck together as a group with some experienced boys leading us and hopefully we take it on into the Six Nations.

"The biggest learning is how to close out games, be more ruthless, don't go into our shells and finish teams off when they are there for the taking. Those small moments in the big games matter and we have to learn quick."

Despite losing five of our previous games and fielding a defence more leaky than Thames Water, I can safely say, as a typical Englishman, we are now world beaters. Who would have predicted that?

A good day out at Twickenham on a rainy, windy day. They showed some bright spots, good skills at times, Japan did their best and in isolation it was a good performance.

Japan have some valuable ball inside English territory but Tevita Tatafu throws a forward pass to Jone Naikabula and the move breaks down.

Even some England fans let out a collective groan at that error. Poor at this level.

In patches you have to give Japan some credit, they have given England problems on the wide outside. They have not given up.
