1. Who should start for Scotland?published at 14:59 Greenwich Mean Time 22 December 2024

    Glasgow Warriors v Edinburgh (15:00)

Assuming Darcy Graham is Gregor Townsend's first-choice winger, who takes the other spot?

Thumbs up for Duhan van der Merwe.

    Thumbs down for Kyle Steyn.

We might revisit this after the match...

  2. Edinburgh 'need to be accurate' - Everittpublished at 14:56 Greenwich Mean Time 22 December 2024

    Glasgow Warriors v Edinburgh (15:00)

Edinburgh head coach Sean Everitt tells BBC Scotland: "I can see the wind swirling so we're not too concerned about it, it'll be the same for both teams.

"Us getting a result today will go a long way for getting tickets sold next week. We need to focus on our rugby now, it's still a URC game, every game is tough and we're playing the champions today.

"We need to be accurate in our performance, not concede turnovers, respect the ball and being disciplined. Glasgow are good in your 22m, so if we can limit their entries we'll be okay."

  3. Smith downplays wind factorpublished at 14:52 Greenwich Mean Time 22 December 2024

    Glasgow Warriors v Edinburgh (15:00)

Warriors head coach Franco Smith tells BBC Scotland about today's troubling conditions: "It's nice to play in the bowl today. The wind might affect general play, maybe the kicks a little bit, but it would have had a bigger influence if we were playing at Scotstoun.

"The other guys have played really well but we said return to perform, not return to play, and he's managed to get to that point. He's a pivotal leader and he'll contribute a lot, being fresh and eager and ready to add his own ingredients to the game.

"Edinburgh have a world class back three and a well-drilled and organised forward pack. There's a big challenge for us.

"To manage good players is one thing, to coach players to be better than they thought they could be is what we're about."

  4. Warriors are the holders despite recent Edinburgh winpublished at 14:51 Greenwich Mean Time 22 December 2024

    Glasgow Warriors v Edinburgh (15:00)

In recent years, it's been Glasgow who have kept the 1872 Cup in their trophy cabinet.

Two wins in December 2022 meant it was comfortable for the Warriors, but 2023 was a slightly different story.

Franco Smith's men won 22-10 in the first leg but then lost 19-14 at Murrayfield. However, the scoreline meant they retained the Cup.

You have to go all the way back to 2020 for Edinburgh's last win on the west side of the M8, a big 15-30 win back then.

  5. Can anyone push for Townsend's XV?published at 14:47 Greenwich Mean Time 22 December 2024

    Glasgow Warriors v Edinburgh (15:00)

Gregor Townsend's starting XV almost picks itself, given the strength at his disposal, but is there anyone who can use today as an audition?

Glasgow stand-off Tom Jordan is creeping towards a place in the matchday 23, while Jamie Bhatti will want to nail his place as back-up loosehead.

Johnny Matthews is the Warriors' starting hooker but he is yet to truly impress Townsend. A big game today could see him force his way in although his replacement, Gregor Hiddleston, is chomping at his heels.

Magnus Bradbury also has a point to prove, having been overlooked for the autumn Tests, while his opposite number Jack Mann is improving game by game and could bolt into the squad.

  6. Smith plays down sibling rivalrypublished at 14:42 Greenwich Mean Time 22 December 2024

    Glasgow Warriors v Edinburgh (15:00)

Glasgow head coach Franco Smith was at Scotland against Croatia last month to sample the Hampden atmosphere, and he wants to hear the famous 'roar' this afternoon.

He also spoke about the match-up in the midfield between Sione Tuipulotu and brother Mosese, both lining up at inside centre for the sides.

"I've played my brother quite a bit in the years when we played, so I know the sensation, know the feeling," Smith said. "I've got a very good record [against him], to be honest. He'll probably like to say different.

"Actually, outside of the field, more is made of it than actually on field."

  7. Van der Merwe reaches milestonepublished at 14:39 Greenwich Mean Time 22 December 2024

    Glasgow Warriors v Edinburgh (15:00)

Given Edinburgh's impressive performance over Bayonne, it's no surprise Sean Everitt only changes one in the starting XV.

It's an enforced change too as Paul Hill misses out at tighthead through injury with D'Arcy Rae coming in.

There's a late change on the bench though, as Ben Vellacott dropped out this morning with Charlie Shiel called up in his place.

And there's a celebration for Duhan van der Merwe, who becomes an Edinburgh centurion. He'll want to celebrate his 100th appearance with a derby win.

  8. Steyn returns to captain Warriorspublished at 14:37 Greenwich Mean Time 22 December 2024

    Glasgow Warriors v Edinburgh (15:00)

Glasgow named a particularly youthful side to face Toulon in the Champions Cup last week and despite that, they only lost by a mere point.

However, there's 10 changes to that side and they look very close to full strength this afternoon.

Bolstered by returning captain Kyle Steyn on the wing, Huw Jones, Tom Jordan and George Horne also come into the back-line.

In the pack, Gregor Brown recovers from a chest injury to take a place in the second row, while Ally Miller and Matt Fagerson are into the back row.

  10. Good afternoon!published at 14:30 Greenwich Mean Time 22 December 2024

    Glasgow Warriors v Edinburgh (15:00)

Welcome, for the very first time, to Hampden Park for the first leg of the 1872 Cup between Scotland's two pro clubs.

There are plenty of Scotland internationals on show, and as usual this rivalry normally throws any form out of the window.

And of course, we have a new stage for proceedings. We're expecting 30,000 fans in Scotland's national football stadium! Impressive stuff.

Let's have a look at the teams.
