    Inevitable.

From the scrum, Charlotte Escudero picks up the ball and it goes through Pauline Bourdon Sansus to Emilie Boulard for her second try of the afternoon. So easy.

South Africa have a line-out near their own tryline but the throw isn't straight.

Unsurprisingly, France opt for a scrum. Eek.

    France 24-3 South Africa

The second half is under way.

South Africa are still down to 14 for two or three minutes.

Marine Menager has made way for France, with Morgane Bourgeois on in her place.

The departure of prop Yonela Ngxingolo (replaced by Xoliswa Khuzwayo) at the end of the first half is the only change for South Africa so far.

How do South Africa get back into this game?

Well, they need to stop France from offloading the ball - they did it nine times to South Africa's two in the first half - and stop giving away penalties in dangerous positions.

They're yet to lose a scrum or a line-out, which is a plus.

Well, that half had a little bit of everything - big hits, scrappy handling, offloads aplenty - but it's France who are on top.

They've scored four tries, with Emilie Boulard, Gaby Vernier, Charlotte Escudero, and Agathe Gerin all crossing the line.

Two of those tries came after Chumisa Qawe was sin-binned for a high tackle and that has since been upgraded to a 20-minute red card.

    France 24-3 South Africa

South Africa make it to half-time without conceding another try, although why they didn't immediately whack the ball into touch after coming up with it I do not know.

France lead 24-3 and are 40 minutes away from topping Pool D and avoiding a quarter-final meeting with New Zealand.

South Africa give away another penalty for offside, this time on their own 22. Their discipline has been poor.

France find touch. They want another try before the break.

A let off for South Africa. They're pinged for offside, which invites France to kick for distance. However, they fail to find touch.

Had they got a line-out deep in South African territory, a fifth try felt inevitable.

Super and really quick to react this French team, Gerin on her 60th cap getting over. The Blues are certainly alive in this game.

    Agathe Gerin (missed con)

    France have a fourth try!

The diminutive Byrhandre Dolf had done well to knock a kick to the corner away from the onrushing Marine Menager and into touch, but France take the restart quickly and Agathe Gerin crashes over from close range.

France have a scrum within touching distance of South Africa's 22.

It's increasingly one-way traffic as the first half comes to a close.

Charlotte Escudero, in her distinctive red cap, is everywhere for France at the moment. The number eight has just popped up on the left wing as France look to launch another assault.

Play has stopped for an injury to a South African player.

France's co-captains quickly gather their team in a huddle, where they do some deep breathing exercises.

This is such a key passage of the game for France. They'll want another try or two to really hammer home their advantage during South Africa's 20-minute red card.

That's just all business, as soon as France is in the 22, they use that launchpad. A really clinical start from France.

    Try indeed.

France's scrum holds steady before rumbling into life. Charlotte Escudero keeps control of the ball at the back before scooping it up and darting left to go over for her first try of the afternoon.
