1997 world champion on BBC Two

Judd Trump is such a powerful scorer. His long game is good. All the facets of his game are good. We will see a lot more from Hossein Vafaei in the coming seasons, it was a good test but he is through.

    Steve Davis
Six-time world champion on BBC Two

Judd Trump was tactically sound. He was pretty clinical. There were no century breaks but he will not be bothered by that at all. He has got off to a good start.

    Murphy 3-3 Lyu

    BBC Two

Over on table two things are becoming very interesting.

Lyu Haotia, who has progressed just once to the second round in three attempts at the Crucible has got back to 3-3 with Shaun Murphy, albeit the 2005 winner is looking in pretty good shape to move back 4-3 ahead.

You can watch that match on BBC Two.

Friends became opponents earlier on as Mark Selby and Joe O'Connor, both from Leicester, went head-to-head.

Selby, 40, was up against O'Connor, 12 years younger and in his first match at the iconic venue. Four-time champion Selby said: "He was the only person I didn't want to draw and you never want to play your friends."

O'Connor said he had watched three of Selby's four Crucible wins in person and may not have been playing snooker without Selby's influence. "Mark is the one I've looked up to since I started playing" said O'Connor, who called it a "dream draw".

After a warm shake of hands, O'Connor, the only debutant at the 2024 event, missed a long red, but if there were any nerves they were soon settled as he took a 20-minute opener, which could've gone either way.

Selby made it 1-1, before O'Connor was very briefly on a 147, potting six reds and five blacks, before opting for the blue, which he promptly missed.

At 2-2 at the mini session, nobody would've expected O'Connor to win five frames on the bounce, playing some wonderful snooker and hitting two century breaks to take a commanding 7-2 lead before the match finishes tomorrow.

But Selby has dug himself out of big holes here before, coming from 5-10 down to beat Ronnie O'Sullivan in the 2014 final and from 4-10 behind against John Higgins in 2017. He will need something similarly special tomorrow afternoon.

Hossein Vafaei does get another chance but is snookered and goes in off. Judd Trump is one good long pot away from victory.

In it goes. The Englishman is just so efficient when it matters and seals his win.

    Trump 9-5 Vafaei

Hossein Vafaei leaves a red over the middle. You're average player at home would knock this in so it's basically a gift-wrapped opportunity for Judd Trump to finish off this match.

  7. Postpublished at 16:52 British Summer Time 21 April

    Trump 9-5 Vafaei

Judd Trump in full flow is simply a joy to watch...he's got no real shot from pink to red but goes round the houses to give himself a chance.

If this drops you'd fancy him to get this done at this visit but it doesn't. Things getting just a little twitchy.

  8. Postpublished at 16:49 British Summer Time 21 April

    Trump 9-5 Vafaei

Judd Trump has the bit between his teeth and is up to 36.

    Trump 9-5 Vafaei

Judd Trump leaves a red dangling over the right corner but Hossein Vafaei can't even get his finger tips on the top cushion.

The Iranian plays a wonderful safety which is totally out of character with the way he's approached this match but Trump has spotted an outrageous plant which he thunders into the right corner.

    Trump 9-5 Vafaei

Is Judd Trump getting frustrated here? The world number two misses a yellow to the right middle and does not look too happy about it.

No damage done though, with his opponent managing four before the match ends up in a safety bout.

    Trump 9-5 Vafaei

    Stephen Hendry
Seven-time world champion on BBC Two

Judd will have to be wary about the way Hossein is playing. He is throwing his cue at things and it can make a difference to your concentration.

  12. Vafaei wins 14th framepublished at 16:35 British Summer Time 21 April

    Trump 9-5 Vafaei

Judd Trump knocks in the final red and races through the colours. At 61-52 up the key ball is the pink but he can't nudge it off the left cushion.

The Englishman elects not to take it on and puts it safe but Hossein Vafaei doubles it to the top right corner and then slides the black in. Wow. We go on.

    Trump 9-4 Vafaei

    Stephen Hendry
Seven-time world champion on BBC Two

That was an inexcusable miss but there is a little bit of pressure on Judd just to finish this off.

  14. Postpublished at 16:32 British Summer Time 21 April

    Trump 9-4 Vafaei

Hossein Vafaei plays a superb improvised plant to the middle to get himself in.

And it is all going smoothly until he misses a relatively simple red to the right middle on 35. That may be his last shot at this year's World Championship.

  15. Postpublished at 16:29 British Summer Time 21 April

    Trump 9-4 Vafaei

Not too much damage done by Judd Trump but with the scores at 33-17, the Englishman gets back in and may have the opportunity to put this match to bed here.

Judd is not happy about something going on in the background and tells the referee "it's happened twice now" after missing a red to the right corner. Was somebody in his eye line while he was on the shot?

    Trump 9-4 Vafaei

    Stephen Hendry
Seven-time world champion on BBC Two

Hossein Vafaei's body language is not good. He looks like a beaten man but you have to keep hanging around and keep believing.

  17. Postpublished at 16:24 British Summer Time 21 April

    Trump 9-4 Vafaei

Can Hossein Vafaei prolong this match?

Judd Trump knocks in a great long red and will want to get this match over asap with Tom Ford or Ricky Walden awaiting in the next round.

Should this match be closer? I'm inclined to agree with Ken Doherty to be honest. Hossein Vafaei really ought to have at least have a couple of frames more on the board.

It is a lovely sunny Sunday afternoon in Sheffield and if you haven't got a ticket for the Crucible, there's still plenty of snooker-based things for all the family to do.

Just outside is Cue Zone, where there are a number of smaller snooker tables and a good chance to grab bragging rights over family and friends.

Across the plaza is Winter Gardens where you can buy loads of snooker merchandise, show your skills with a variety of snooker challenges on a full-size table or watch where Hazel Irvine and the rest of the BBC team are recording television segments from.

If you just want to put your feet up and enjoy some snooker, then watching along in a deckchair in the sun in front of a huge screen is a very relaxing Sunday.
