  2. Murphy makes confident startpublished at 15:07 British Summer Time 21 April

    Murphy 1-0 Lyu

Shaun Murphy takes the opening frame in his match against Lyu Haotian with a break of 53. A good solid start for the world number eight.

    Trump 6-4 Vafaei

A loose safety from Hossein Vafaei sets Judd Trump on his way. How many can he make here?

  5. Postpublished at 14:52 British Summer Time 21 April

    Trump 6-3 Vafaei

Hossein Vafaei needs one red to leave Judd Trump needing snookers. His policy thus far has been all-out attack.

There is a very difficult red to the top left corner that barely anyone would take on...and the Iranian doesn't either instead sending the white across the table a couple of times off the red and laying a sensational snooker behind the brown.

That could be a frame-winning shot.

As it turns out, it isn't despite getting four points from the Englishman. However, he is then able to complete the job a couple of shots down the line.

One of those difficult reds I mentioned a few minutes back catches Hossein Vafaei out but he has a 46-point lead.

Shaun Murphy was only 22 years old when he made it through qualifying and stormed through the field, beating Chris Small, John Higgins, Steve Davis, Peter Ebdon and Matthew Stevens to become the 2005 world champion.

He was unheralded that year and has not been tipped this year either.

"My form hasn't been great, but when you come here form goes out of the window to some degree," said Murphy. "I've not forgotten what to do. I've lost in the first round in the last couple of seasons and got to the final in 2021 so I seem to have a really good run or bomb out in the first round.

"Before qualifying, Neil Robertson was two rounds behind me and 14-1 to win the tournament and I was 25-1, two rounds ahead of him, and he's not even here now so there's no pressure at all."

On facing China's Lyu Haotian, Murphy added: "Everyone was worried with Robertson coming through qualifying and when he lost everyone breathed a sigh of relief. But my opponent is a very good player, he has beaten me and I've beaten him so I'm sure it will be a good game."

  8. Postpublished at 14:47 British Summer Time 21 April

    Trump 6-3 Vafaei

What a miss that is. Judd Trump loses concentration for a moment and very easy red to the left corner goes awry.

Hossein Vafaei is back in but this looks like hard work with three or four reds tucked up on the rail.

  9. Postpublished at 14:43 British Summer Time 21 April

    Trump 6-3 Vafaei

And now for all Hossein Vafaei's early work Judd Trump flukes a red into the bottom left corner and is plum on the blue.

  10. Postpublished at 14:41 British Summer Time 21 April

    Trump 6-3 Vafaei

Hossein Vafaei's cue-ball control issues seem to have carried over from Saturday to Sunday. The Iranian goes in and out of baulk several times after leaving himself the wrong side of the blue before his break comes to and end on 30.

A handy run down the local club with your mates but not the sort of heavy scoring that would likely apply put pressure on Judd Trump.

Defending champion Luca Brecel went out on day one and four-time winner Mark Selby, one of the absolute greats of the game, looks in serious trouble trailing Joe O'connor.

But what are your greatest Crucible shocks?

  12. Postpublished at 14:37 British Summer Time 21 April

    Trump 6-3 Vafaei

Early statement of intent? Hossein Vafaei absolutely larrups a long red into the bottom left corner and screws back superbly to get on the blue.

  15. Murphy flying under the radarpublished at 14:30 British Summer Time 21 April

Shaun Murphy's only world title came back in 2005 and having been one of the favourites in 2023 he comes into this year's tournament slightly under the radar in terms of being one of the men expected to triumph.

That's largely because since winning the Championship League at the start of the campaign he has struggled for consistent form with a run to the semi-finals of the Masters being the highlight.

He did produce a moment of snooker brilliance to become the first ever player to make a Shoot Out 147 back in December but will need to be at his best to see off world number 26 Lyu Haotian.

  16. Trump in chargepublished at 14:28 British Summer Time 21 April

Judd Trump was in pretty ruthless form during the opening session of his match against Hossein Vafaei on Saturday.

The world number two will take pretty handy 6-3 lead into this afternoon's concluding session but the scoreline could arguably have been the other way round with Iran's Vafaei left to rue a series of missed opportunities, particularly early in the match.

  17. Selby's struggles continue against debutant O'Connorpublished at 14:21 British Summer Time 21 April

Four-time world champion Mark Selby looks to be in big trouble at 7-2 down against Crucible debutant Joe O’Connor.

The duo both hail from Leicester, are friends and occasional practice partner and maybe that helped O'Connor settle.

The 28-year-old qualifier may have never beaten Selby but he looked far from overawed and went from strength to strength earlier on Sunday making three half centuries and breaks of 122 and 101.

Selby looked pretty despondent after losing to Gary Wilson at the recent Tour Championship and suggested he could retire from the sport if things don’t improve.

  18. Jones advances with comfortable win over Zhangpublished at 14:15 British Summer Time 21 April

Right here we go again, we've got Judd Trump v Hossein Vafaei and Shaun Murphy v Lyu Haotian incoming but first of all, what a great win for Jak Jones in one of Sunday's early matches.

The 30-year-old produced an assured display to defeat 11th seed Zhang Anda 10-4.

Jones has now won his last three meetings against Zhang, who won the International Championship earlier this season.

Just the four half centuries for the Welshman but he's into the last 16 for the second year running and will face either Mark Williams or Si Jiahui next.

  19. Gilbert stuns 2023 champion Brecel at the Cruciblepublished at 10:12 British Summer Time 21 April
