  1. Murphy opens up leadpublished at 16:04 British Summer Time 21 April

    Murphy 3-1 Lyu

Breaks of 53, 71 and 90 have helped Shaun Murphy into a healthy 3-1 lead over on table two.

A good start for the 2005 champ who will surely now want to put his foot down in the second half of that opening session.

  2. Vafaei needs to learn to be more 'clinical'published at 16:02 British Summer Time 21 April

    Trump 9-4 Vafaei

    Ken Doherty
1997 world champion on BBC Two

Hossein had a wonderful chance in that frame. He might be accomplished playing with his left but it is such an important moment in the frame.

There are fine margins at top level sport. This match could have been an awful lot closer. He needs to learn from these other top guys, how ruthless they are and clinical. He has the talent but needs to be more clinical.

  3. Trump on the verge of victorypublished at 15:59 British Summer Time 21 April

    Trump 9-4 Vafaei

Judd Trump does the honours and clears all the colours up to the black. He will head into the mid-session interval needing just one more frame for a place in the second round.

Did Hossein Vafaei really believe that he was going to clear up?

  5. Postpublished at 15:57 British Summer Time 21 April

    Trump 8-4 Vafaei

Hossein Vafaei is on 38 and closing in on the final red or two. He switches hands to take a straight forward red to the right corner... and then misses, rattling it in the jaws.

Judd Trump is straight out of his chair. That should be that for this frame. Surely?

    Trump 8-4 Vafaei

    Stephen Hendry
Seven-time world champion on BBC Two

Hossein Vafaei has arguably gone favourite to win this frame. He has not had a lot of table time but what a chance.

    Trump 8-4 Vafaei

Hossein Vafaei knocks in a long red to right corner...could he pinch this frame?

Hossein Vafaei manages 11 before he too breaks down.

  9. Postpublished at 15:51 British Summer Time 21 April

    Trump 8-4 Vafaei

Just 43 as it happens but the Englishman then leaves his opponent in all sorts of bother up near the top cushion and takes another eight points after two fouls.

Hossein Vafaei finally catches a break with his third attempt and it pays off with Judd Trump spurning a chance to the bottom right corner. Looked like he caught that too thick.

    Trump 8-4 Vafaei

Judd Trump is starting to motor with a fair bit of help from Hossein Vafaei it has to be said.

The Iranian leaves Trump in again and it's just a case of how many points the Englishman puts on the scoreboard here.

The scale of the challenge in front of Hossein Vafaei was enormous even before this match began.

The Iranian is ranked 19th in the world and Judd Trump, who is second is regarded as one of the best players ever to grace the sport.

While Vafaei has won one ranking event in total, Trump has collected 17 of his 28 over the last five years alone as our graphic shows and of course has triumphed in all of the Triple Crown events.

  12. Trump moves two frames from victorypublished at 15:38 British Summer Time 21 April

    Trump 8-4 Vafaei

Judd Trump is smashing in the sort of pots, that well only he can make look very, very easy.

He misses a long blue but with a 74-point lead collects another frame.

  13. Postpublished at 15:33 British Summer Time 21 April

    Trump 7-4 Vafaei

A fairly lengthy safety exchange ends with Judd Trump winning that particular duel and back in the balls.

Hard to see him not finishing off the frame from here even with one or two tricky balls.

  14. Postpublished at 15:23 British Summer Time 21 April

    Trump 7-4 Vafaei

Just the 12 points for Judd Trump so plenty of life in this frame.

That was a poor break off from Hossein he went out of the arena and it's a lapse.

Hossein Vafaei breaks off and leaves Judd Trump with a long red to the bottom corner pocket.

  18. Trump takes frame 11published at 15:16 British Summer Time 21 April

    Trump 7-4 Vafaei

Judd Trump hits a Trump special, a long just off straight red, to the bottom corner.

With the frame in the bag out come a couple of exhibition shots as he clears the table as far as the blue.

  19. Postpublished at 15:13 British Summer Time 21 April

    Trump 6-4 Vafaei

Judd Trump is not quite in full flow yet but he is colour and red away from taking the second frame of this afternoon session...

He knocks in the blue but clips the brown as he tries to go in and out of baulk. Chance gone so it's just a safety for the Englishman.

This is what they are all playing for

You don't have to look hard to see pictures of last year's champion - in fact you can't miss them.

As you walk into the venue, there is Luca Brecel front and centre above you holding the trophy. Go up the stairs to get into the arena and a huge poster of him is the first thing you pass.

Brecel's shock 10-9 loss to David Gilbert on Saturday, having been 6-3 and 9-6 ahead extends the 'Crucible Curse', where no first-time winner here has then retained their title the following year.

It also massively throws open the top half of the year. Throw in the fact too that fifth seed Mark Selby is in huge trouble, 7-2 down against qualifier Joe O'Connor, and the top half is suddenly looking anyone's.

If Selby loses tomorrow, there will only be two of the top eight players in the world in the top half - fourth-ranked Mark Allen and eighth-ranked Shaun Murphy.
