  4. 'Wu will be here for a long, long time'published at 17:57 British Summer Time 20 April

    Result: Williams 10-8 Wu

    Shaun Murphy
2005 world champion on BBC Two

A word for Wu Yize - against most of the other seeds, he probably would have won that match.

The fact he was playing someone like Mark Williams, who has all of that experience and all of that guile, it was what saw him through.

He [Wu] is going to be here for a long, long time.

  5. 'I got stronger towards the end'published at 17:55 British Summer Time 20 April

    Result: Williams 10-8 Wu

Mark Williams, speaking to BBC Two after his win over Wu Yize:

"It was a tough game all the way through. I think I was 3-0 up and then I didn't pot a ball for three or four frames. Some of the balls he potted were incredible. He's got the potential to win this tournament, there's absolutely no question. His long-potting was unbelievable and I just had to go back to my old break-off because every single time he potted a long red.

"I thought that I had to do something because I can't outscore him or outpot him, but I could still try to outwit him I suppose.

"I got stronger towards the end. When I nicked the frame to go 8-8, I potted a couple of long ones and then made a frame-winning break in the last frame, I actually felt quite good to be honest.

"What a match and what an atmosphere."

Fair play to both players - that was an exceptional contest - but it's Williams who goes through.

    Ken Doherty
1997 world champion on BBC Two

You have to hand it to Mark Williams. The shots he comes up with - he's such a wonderful shot-maker.

That shot with the spider, the long reds - he's so calm under pressure.

    Williams 9-8 Wu

    Mark Williams. What a player.

  11. Postpublished at 17:33 British Summer Time 20 April

    Williams 8-8 Wu

Mark Williams gets to 47 and then needs the spider. The Welshman is struggling to even get into position to knock this red in but somehow still manages it.

This looks like a shot too far mind...a thin cut on a red with the rest that he leaves hovering off the bottom right bag. The black comes to his rescue though and when Wu Yize fails to flick it in playing off the cushion first, he is back in business.

    Williams 8-8 Wu

    Stephen Hendry
Seven-time world champion on BBC Two

How he fashioned that into a chance to win the frame is incredible. It is just what Mark Williams does.

People ask why John Higgins, Ronnie O'Sullivan and Mark Williams are still at the top of the game...it is because they play better under pressure.

    Allen 5-4 Fan

Mark Allen makes a couple of modest contributions in frame nine, but they're enough to put him in front for the first time in his first-round match with Fan Zhengyi.

  15. 'Williams will never panic'published at 17:17 British Summer Time 20 April

    Williams 8-8 Wu

    Ken Doherty
1997 world champion on BBC Two

He is full of guile, tenacity and experience. Mark Williams will never panic.

His long potting has not been as good as Wu Yize's today but when he needs to find a shot, more often than not he finds one.

  16. Williams responds in nip-and-tuck contestpublished at 17:15 British Summer Time 20 April

    Williams 8-8 Wu

Mark Williams looks so good as he gets to 37 but then misses a high-tariff plant to the left middle.

He leaves Wu Yize a tough opener but the 21-year-old does not bat an eyelid, knocking in the red and nudging more into play in the process.

Wu almost breaks down on 55 but gets a delightful flick off the yellow to stay in prime position before missing a red with the fishing tackle.

All of a sudden it's advantage Williams, who plays a sensational shot to get a snooker and the upper hand in the safety exchange. The Welshman snicks in a brilliant last red and clears up to get level.

  17. 'Allen has got the pace right'published at 17:12 British Summer Time 20 April

    Allen 4-4 Fan

    Steve Davis
    Six-time world champion

    Mark AllenImage source, PA Media

I think Mark Allen has got the pace right for his game - not too fast, not too slow. He's given himself a chance to play with rhythm once he gets among the reds at the top of the table.

Sometimes recently we've criticised him for being ultra careful, but this has been a good effort here.

  18. Allen levels with 89 breakpublished at 17:11 British Summer Time 20 April

    Allen 4-4 Fan

Mark Allen was 3-0 down in this match but has won four of the past five frames to level it at 4-4.

He clinches frame eight with an impressive break of 89, which required a couple of very good rescue shots along the way to keep it going.

Whoever wins the next frame will lead at the start of Monday's concluding session.

  19. Postpublished at 16:57 British Summer Time 20 April

    Williams 7-8 Wu

    Ken Doherty

There is still a long way to go in this match. You will have to scrape Mark Williams off the table to win.

  20. Wu hits the frontpublished at 16:54 British Summer Time 20 April

    Williams 7-8 Wu

What a frame. That pretty much sums up the match. Wu Yize builds a 42-point lead and Mark Williams knocks in 44 but then stumbles over a safety shot and presents a golden opportunity to his opponent.

Wu does not pass that up, smashing in a long red and then playing a couple of excellent positional shots to leave the Welshman needing snookers.
