Scotland's John Higgins, speaking to BBC Sport: "That was a tough game. I thought Joe played great in the first session and I just managed to scramble out at 5-4. Tonight I played better.

"That was the most emotional I have ever been today. I left my wife and I was in tears. Obviously my father-in-law wasn't great. I was sitting having dinner with my boy last night and I was thinking about sitting here with my dad 25 years ago. I was drained today.

"I had a couple of hours sleep and I came out tonight and felt a lot better and played a lot better. I am still so proud that I am still playing at a good level at this age."

    Steve Davis
Six-time world champion on BBC Four

John Higgins will be very pleased with the way he closed that out. Joe showed some weakness and John pounced. You cannot underestimate how relieved he will be by that win.

You just want a run in the tournament and you have to get through that first-round match by hook or by crook.

  5. Higgins advances past O'Connor in tense affair.published at 22:52 British Summer Time 21 April

John Higgins is back at the table and looking at a difficult longish red as frame and match ball. Which he smashes in.

  6. Postpublished at 22:47 British Summer Time 21 April

    Higgins 9-7 O'Connor

John Higgins is looking oh so good and one red away from victory when he over screws on the pink and can't hold the cue ball for the red through the gap to the right corner.

Joe O'Conner will get another chance.

  7. Postpublished at 22:35 British Summer Time 21 April

    Si 5-3 Gilbert

Si Jiahui falls just short of a century, as he enjoys a run of 97. That break ensures he will have an overnight lead.

    Stephen Hendry
Seven-time world champion on BBC Two

John Higgins will fancy the job if he can just get through this first round. He will do whatever it takes to win this match.

Even if it means playing a minute a shot, he won't care as long as he gets the W. He is one of the fiercest competitors the game has ever seen.

  9. Postpublished at 22:29 British Summer Time 21 April

    Higgins 9-7 O'Connor

    Steve Davis
Six-time world champion on BBC Four

That shows the class of John Higgins. It has been tough for him. When you look at his average shot time of 30 seconds, it suggests it's been hard work.

He's been getting down and up on shots more than I've seen in the past. It is better to play with rhythm but sometimes under severe pressure, which is the first round here, you can put the grind on a bit. It doesn't matter how pretty it is. It is about getting the win.

  10. Higgins closes in on victorypublished at 22:26 British Summer Time 21 April

    Higgins 9-7 O'Connor

John Higgins heavily punishes Joe O'Connor with a superb 114 break.

  11. Postpublished at 22:20 British Summer Time 21 April

    Higgins 8-7 O'Connor

Joe O'Connor gets a start but twitches on a black on its spot.

John Higgins is at the table with a chance to construct a sizable break.

  12. Si regains narrow advantagepublished at 22:15 British Summer Time 21 April

    Si 4-3 Gilbert

Si Jiahui and David Gilbert are struggling to put frames to bed in one or two goes.

It is making for compelling viewing, as Si pinches the seventh frame 67-63. The 22-year-old has a top break of 49 so far in this match.

  13. Postpublished at 22:09 British Summer Time 21 April

    Higgins 8-7 O'Connor

    Steve Davis
Six-time world champion on BBC Four

That was the most jaw-dropping frame we have had in this match so far. There were so many twists and turns and dodgy positional shots played.

  14. Higgins wins tense 15th framepublished at 22:07 British Summer Time 21 April

    Higgins 8-7 O'Connor

John Higgins gets a snooker back on the pink and when his opponent can't get it safe, he knocks in frame ball for the second time!

  15. Postpublished at 22:05 British Summer Time 21 April

    Higgins 7-7 O'Connor

John Higgins gets a snooker on the green and is left with it to the middle after Joe O'Connor flicks it off the cushion.

The four-time champion clips that in and thunders a brown to the middle before knocking in the blue.

He doesn't go for the pink though and gets snookered by the Englishman next. What drama. He is 11 points behind with 13 on the table.

  16. Postpublished at 21:53 British Summer Time 21 April

    Higgins 7-7 O'Connor

John Higgins is looking for a counter clearance and moves the difficult red as he gets to 33.

He has a horrible looking pink to take on now though, which he misses. He leaves Joe O'Connor in the perfect position to wrap up the frame but the Englishman makes a right hash of the positioning after knocking in the red and can't roll in a long black.

Higgins, back at the table gets level on points at 40-40 but can't pot the green.

  17. Postpublished at 21:45 British Summer Time 21 April

    Higgins 7-7 O'Connor

    Stephen Hendry
Seven-time world champion on BBC Two

John Higgins looks bang under it to me. There is more pressure on this than if he was in the final. This first round is unique.

  18. Postpublished at 21:36 British Summer Time 21 April

    Higgins 7-7 O'Connor

It has been a slow methodical match as far as both John Higgins and Joe O'Connor are concerned.

Higgins is averaging 31 seconds a shot, O'Connor is up at 33 seconds. Free flowing it definitely has not been, albeit the Englishman, is looking the stronger at present and will not really care.

  19. Gilbert bounces backpublished at 21:33 British Summer Time 21 April

    Si 3-3 Gilbert

Si Jiahui and David Gilbert just cannot be separated at the minute.

It's another scrappy(ish) frame, which goes the way of the two-time semi-finalist.

  20. O'Connor wins tactical exchange to get levelpublished at 21:29 British Summer Time 21 April

    Higgins 7-7 O'Connor

John Higgins is left cursing his luck. The four-time champion splits the reds open in 37 but is without a pot.

His safety attempt then leaves his opponent with a plant that Joe O'Connor converts.

The Englishman then has Higgins in trouble behind a yellow and when the Scot makes a mistake in the tactical exchanges that follow it is effectively frame over, with O'Connor in prime position.
